Girls, would you break up with a new boyfriend because of this?

So for the last few months I began dating a girl I really liked. It got to the point that we met each other’s families. She met mine first. Then, last week, I went to finally meet her parents. We were all chatting in the living room while waiting for food to finish cooking, and everything was going great. While I was talking to her mom and sister in the living room I was standing up twirling my key lanyard around my finger (I have a habit of doing this). Mid convo, I accidentally wacked myself with the keys on the lanyard…square in the nuts. It was probably the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever experienced considering I had just met these people and I couldn’t help but immediately crumple to my knees in the living room. It was so bad that once my girlfriend was able to help me up from my knees 5+ min later, she brought me home because I was feeling so sick from the hit. I could definitely tell that her family, especially her mom and sister, thought it was really funny.

Then, all of a sudden this week, my girlfriend broke up with me, only giving generic reasons like “you haven’t done anything wrong, I just want to see new people and remain friends.” I felt like everything in our relationship was perfect up until the ball shot incident…so now I am torn and all in my head about why she changed heart all of a sudden.

Do you think she broke up with me because I embarrassed her in front of her family? Would you be embarrassed if that happened to your new boyfriend the first time he met your family? Would you think he was being a wuss if just a small wack with car keys essentially paralyzed him in your parents’ living room and made him so sick he had to leave? Honest answers please.

I don't think that this singular incident was the reason she broke up with you: embarrassing yourself in front of her family. I hate to say this, but I wonder if your former girlfriend was shallow and thought maybe it was unmasculine to have been hurt so much by getting your nuts hit... It could also be that she'd considered breaking things off for a while, and just never voiced it until after the incident. Coincidence maybe.

Meeting her family was a big deal to her which is why it didn’t happen the first couple months of dating…so it just seems unlikely that she was already contemplating breaking up with me before this incident considering we were finally leveling up to me meeting her parents. I think you may be right about her thinking it was pitiful for me to drop like that. Would you be surprised if your boyfriend was disabled and sick from a relatively soft hit like that? Again, I want the truth so don’t worry about my feelings.

It might not have been a soft of a hit as you thought. Don't sell yourself short. I think some women don't understand that the balls are literally like exposed organs. They are only covered by a little skin. I'm sorry if she broke up with you over this and is too ashamed to be honest. I tried to suspend my judgement when guys coil under the pressure of getting their balls hit. It looks pathetic, but I don't UNDERSTAND it, so I don't judge.

I appreciate that and commend you for not being judgmental about it. I wonder if she just thought it was pathetic, or if she thought, “wow, this guy’s balls are so vulnerable and such a target that he’d never be able to protect me from violence if I needed it”

I think some women do feel that way... It wouldn't be a bad idea for men to wear a protective cup all the time tbh to make sure they're never vulnerable like that. I've thought about situations like that: if a man were to attack me, and my husband were incapacitated. It'd be scary and he'd never get over it.

It would just be extremely uncomfortable and inconvenient to wear a cup all the time. Plus I wouldn’t expect another man to go for the nuts. I’m sure a woman that I’m protecting my girlfriend from would do it, but not a man. Thoughts?

You don't hear a lot of muggings where they go for the nuts, or any assaults really. It was just a thought. They're uncomfortable? The cups?

Yes because they are rather large and and so it basically feels like a piece of plastic is keeping your legs from being closed all the way. You may be right though, usually a mugger is attacking a woman so there are no nuts to go for, but if I was trying to protect a girlfriend while she was being attacked the man probably wouldn’t have any standards and may go for my nuts.

It’d probably be a bad idea for me to tell my ex that I’ll start wearing a cup everywhere to try to get her back, don’t you think? I just hate for something as silly as me having ultra sensitive nuts ending a relationship that was good.

If she really left over something that shallow, was it really that good? You might have had chemistry, but that doesn't equal a "good" relationship. You can have chemistry with a serial killer--they're charismatic. A good relationship means that person is willing to stick around through the toughest times. If she's willing to bail after something this small, consider it a blessing that you didn't waste any more time :/ I've wasted a LOT of time on guys I shouldn't have...

But does your opinion change about whether she was shallow if she didn’t actually leave because she thought I just looked pitiful that night, and instead she left because she felt I couldn’t protect her from men/women altercations in the future because of my nuts?

I'd say she's mistaken and she'll be surprised that NO MAN can really withstand that. Except Chuck Norris (literally). She's literally asking you to be super human.

She more than likely wasn’t very happy with the relationship before that either, and this incident was just the icing on the cake. I doubt that it was this singular event that caused her to want to end things with you.

Thanks for choosing my answer. And to answer your question, I would not break up with a guy because of that. Yes it would be an awkward and embarrassing situation because of my family being present, but I’d still stay with him if I liked him. I would not look down on him for being in that amount of pain.

Well swinging your keys around, firstly depending on her family and her sensibilities they may had thought you were childish. But then yes, for you to hit yourself in the testicles with it and fall down in front of them in the first time meeting is embarrassing for you and her, so yes you probably looked like an idiot sorry

I finally got the truth out of her, and my fears were correct. That is the sole reason she broke up with me. She thought my reaction showed too much weakness
