Regarding your update and your question in general: this is not necessarily a girl/guy thing. This is an "are you a good person thing" and willing to invest the time to learn about the person you're attracted to. Sure, some people are going to talk badly about the person and others will give info or opinions. The mature person observes and listens and learns and thinks critically and considers and so on.
