We've technically known each other since we were kids. We went to school together, then drifted apart with life, then reconnected and he sent me a friend request. We've never really talked and got to know each other, and I'm now realizing I'd like to. I just want to send a nice hello like: "Hey. I know we don't really talk, but just wanted to say hi and see how you've been." But I'm afraid of it coming across desperate or weird. We do live in different states due to work now, so I'm also nervous he'll think it's weird I'm reaching out when we don't live close. I just can't decide if I should take the risk and do it or forget it. Thoughts?

I don't see anything wrong with that. I mean, he sent the friend request first, right? And even if he didn't, reconnecting with people or checking up on people you haven't spoken to in a while is a pretty normal thing.
It won't look desperate or seem weird?
I don't see why it would. Just seems like a normal thing. Reaching out to check how an old friend is doing.
I do have an interest in him, that's why I'm nervous.
I figured. But I think it'll be fine. I hope he feels the same way you do.
I just worry it might be a dumb move on my part. I've always heard the guy should make the first move. But I also know you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. It just scares me.
Well, it is traditional for the guy to make the first move, people aren't as traditional as they used to be. And if no moves are being taken at all, well... All i'm saying is what do you have to lose?
