"Special needs" people can't work? Try telling Stephen Hawking that while he's in a wheelchair and can't move any muscles. A lot of disabled people go to college for the sole purpose of finding jobs that cater to their disabilities, I would know because that's why I went. You need a degree to work out of the home.
@John_Doesnt yes some disabled people are not able to work like me for instance I had seizures as a baby and I had surgery when I was 6 years old and I been seizure free since but that's part of why I can't work or drive a car
If the chances were that bad then nobody would bother going to college. The average salary of someone with a simple Associate's in computer programming is 110,000. It's not rich, but that's way better than not having a degree. If I were to get a PhD in computer science my salary could go up to 7 figures easily.
Then you should have specified that you live in a weird country where college doesn't mean anything. Also, this would have negated most of your argument because the US has the best Universities and worst public schools. So going to college in the US would definitely increase your education, intelligence and job success.
Education and job success? Maybe. but I don't give a shit about it?
But intelligence? Are you serious? Intelligence is a genetic thing, and even if you go to 100 different colleges it won't help. Don't be so stupid to believe that. Have you got any evidence?
If you don't give a shit about job success then you are either rich or okay with starving. People need money to eat. "Intelligence is a genetic thing, and even if you go to 100 different colleges it won't help. Don't be so stupid to believe that. Have you got any evidence?" That is extremely hypocritical and ignorant because psychology is completely divided on whether intelligence is genetic or comes from environment. Do YOU have any evidence to support a claim that you just made up? How do you explain that third world countries with low education typically have a lower average IQ score? Intelligence is also subjective. Which any psychology textbook will agree on.
@John_Doesnt Average salary for an Associate's degree in computer programming is not 110k a year. More like 60k. With a PHD in computer science you will not get 7 figure salaries unless you're lucky. More around 200k depending on your skills. Just saying.
@nog642 this is the average salary for people with a bachelor's or certificate after high school: www.mynextmove.org/.../15-1131.00?redir=15-1021.00 It looks around 80,000 a year. As for computer science making 7 figures: Bill Gates and Steve Jobs both went to Junior college for their computer science degrees and they make more than 7 figures. Computer science depends on work ethic and education.
80k includes bachelor's degrees. I was talking about just associate degrees.
And pointing out a couple rich guys doesn't exactly make your point. The average salary for someone who has a PHD in computer science is closer to about 200k. Also Bill Gates and Steve Jobs don't even have PHDs.
@nog642 no, they had either associates or dropped out in junior college. That's the actual point I was making. Many programmers take their skills elsewhere and make lots of cash. Just like a philosophy major can't make a ton of money as a "philosopher", but they can take that education/degree to other places to make lots of money.
Before I rip you to pieces I'd like to know what job you have and what your socioeconomic status is.

Unemployed. While YOU kiss your boss' ass, I'm here listening to music and drinking.
Better unemployed than working in a 9 to 5 job and earn shit whilst your boss earns tons. Now hate me as much as you want. I couldn't care less about a society pawn like you.
Wait wait wait. You're unemployed and you sit on your ass all day drinking and complaining about school, while those of us that went to school or are going to school to get a job (as an astrophysicist which is a job I really want, so the stuff you said was useless is going to come in handy) have/are going to have to pay taxes in order to support you? Nice
@FallOutBoy2001 Hey I'm like a decade older than you. You'll realize later how schools are useless so stop criticizing me.
And if you want to be astrophysicist you have to memorize every shit you learn. Yeah memorize is the correct word.
At least I don't kiss any boss' ass. I don't want to work and being treated like shit. Those who work should grab the boss by the neck and smash his head on the wall, instead of being afraid that he/she will fire them. I'm aware how people are being treated in jobs from other people I know and who work. And you know what they tell me?
yes, memorize or consult the chart on the wall. Yes, the University of Chicago, where I want to go, has a chart with the formulas on a wall. I also don't kiss ass, which has proved to be a problem, but oh well.
And clearly, a decade hasn't done much for you in the intelligence department.
Listening to music and drinking beer while living off welfare and being unemployed may be enough for you. It's fairly common that there are many people who don't want to work or have little career ambition. There's nothing wrong with that, if you're willing to accept the lifestyle that comes with it.
Most others are not content to sit around and do nothing productive all day. I personally get bored after a weekend of doing nothing and probably wouldn't enjoy the life you lead. I value learning, even if the things I learn aren't directly applied to everyday life. And I like the money that comes with my education and skills that allow me to buy pretty much anything I want, while knowing I don't have to worry about living paycheck to paycheck or being on welfare.
Some people only want to be in the top 1%. Others are perfectly fine in the bottom 1%.
@FallOutBoy2001 I've struggled with depression all my life and if by having my brain stuffed in a jar or dissected after death I can further research that will help someone struggling with what I have. Then I'm starting to view it as an obligation. I think that a hundred years after my death I will be looking down and seeing people having far more effective treatments that we have today and I can say that in some tiny way I helped that happen
@FallOutBoy2001 I want my brain to be used in depression research. I know that treatments keep getting more and more effective and 100 years after my death I want to say, Yeah I helped with that
"I want my brain to be used in depression research. I know that treatments keep getting more and more effective and 100 years after my death I want to say, Yeah I helped with that" Hopefully while playing poker with freddie mercury
@Waffles731 I want to help people work out what influences sexuality, or why certain people suffer from sensory overloads but others don't, and treatments for it.
Freddie Mercury may be the best musician ever, and quite the character. I'll join you after I talk to Einstein and Carl Sagan (my music teacher used to invite him over for dinner, lucky bastard)
@FallOutBoy2001 Nah what makes you believe I'd care to donate it? Would I earn any money for it? Even if I did I'd not be able to take them to the other world.
Because being successful in our society depends on being educated. Without a major revolution that changes our entire social and political system and all of our lifestyles drastically, which frankly I have no desire for, there is no way for the next generation to be successful without a proper education.
If you think about all the things that you wouldn't have without the society you live in- like the internet connection that you're using to read this, the medicine that keeps you healthy, and the roads that you drive on- you might change your tune. It really doesn't matter whether or not you give a shit about it, though. It's here, and it's not going anywhere unless something really drastic happens.
I don't drive and I hardly use any medicine. I'm a lucky bastard when it comes to health I should say, despite the fact I don't follow a health-freaky lifestyle. I drink like thrice per week on average. Haha.
How do you afford to buy your drinks? Where do you live. Because in my experience when you don't have a job, you run out of money. And when you don't have any money, you tend to not be able to buy alcohol. Or pay rent.
@nog642 Yep that is typically how it works. I don't think the QA is fully comprehending how things are connected. He may not drive, but does he also not take the bus, ride a bike, or get rides from friends/family/taxis? Does he never go anywhere? I'm legitimately confused about how he can fail to understand how much we all rely on society in every part of our daily lives.
He said somewhere that he walks everywhere. I still don't understand how he affords his drinks or where he lives. Or how he can have wifi to be on this website.
He says he's 25. Maybe he still lives with his parents. That would explain where he lives. I don't think his parents would buy him a bunch of alcohol though.
Yes I walk everywhere within my area. Why should I take a bus for one hour walk? I'm not a lazy turd who goes everywhere with his/her car or using transit like MANY people who work 9 to 5 jobs.
And I live on my own. Do you want the real truth? I live on my family home, and my mother is remarried and she lives in her new home as well. She gives me money every month. I don't have to pay rents and shit because the house I live in is my family home as I said.
You're still probably walking on roads, paths, or trails that are made by your city, not wandering aimlessly through the woods. And even if you walk everywhere, you still have access to goods and products that are being imported to your area through systems that are part of our social structure. You really have no right to claim that you don't rely on society unless you are completely self sufficient. Living off your own subsistence farm, not using municipal water, electricity, or plumbing, no internet or phone, weaving your own fabric to sew your own clothes. That's the type of thing that is necessary if you really want to poo-poo society.
So you're supported by your mom. Finally an answer. You realize not everyone's parents are willing to just pay them. To them not having a job is not an option. And to get a job you need to AT LEAST finish high school. So school is very useful for them.
The reason everyone else is kissing their boss's ass while you drink and listen to music is because your mom kisses her boss's ass then pays for your alcohol and internet connection.
You don't get very far in life without kissing SOMEONE'S ass, be it a boss, customer, investor, or what have you. None of us are fully independent. If you are fully independent, you are living in the woods wearing animal skins and foraging for berries. That's what true independence from our society would look like. I don't know why you believe that anything you said in this myTake is true, but you're in for a rude awakening at some point.
Ah sorry but I was pretty drunk today and I'm not in the mood. But anyway this is the most important part of the article:
"school is an inefficient use of the children's time, because it requires each child to learn specific subject matter in a particular manner, at a particular pace, and at a specific time regardless of that individual's present or future needs, interests, goals, or any pre-existing knowledge he or she might have about the topic."
Expect if you're a big time actor or singer, you need school to get a high paying job. There has been exceptions to the rule like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. However, they are among the few. So school is not useless. You silly little boy.
Yes it does. Average salary goes up every higher degree. Someone with a PHD on average earns more than someone with a master's who on average warns more than someone with just a bachelor's degree who on average earns more than someone with just an associate's degree who on average earns more than someone with just a high school diploma who on average earns more than someone like you who doesn't even have a high school diploma.
@nog642 First of all, what makes you believe I'm an American? We're talking about two different school systems. And most people here who've finished the high-school equivalent, and have a university degree work at shitty 9 to 5 jobs.
Ok. Other countries have a different but similar education system. Average salary still goes up the longer your education lasts.
And they may work at a bunch of shitty jobs but in the end they get a good job. You on the other hand have no job. I have no idea how you're able to survive.
@BaileyisDarcy hire* And for a job that requires qualification, like for example an engineer of some sort, they can't hire someone who's not qualified. You're right though that if you aim to have some sort of office job there's no point of getting a PHD or something. And if you plan to work at McDonalds for the rest of our life there's no point of going to college at all.
@nog642 Dude seriously you seem like to be the ultra-annoying kid who has "A" everywhere. In your case, I wish there is someone who's bullying you in school. I'm against bullying, as I mentioned, but in your case it's a must.
It isn't about what you learn, it's about how you apply the information you gain practically. You don't get marks in exams for spewing out trivia, you get it for articulating points and being able to go through information and derive meaning from it.

For most jobs school is completely useless. Some jobs and career fields require it like becoming a doctor or a job similar to that.
High school should be used to teach kids how to buy a house, invest, and know about stuff that will actually affect their life.
Most stuff in college is useless unless it's a certain career field your going into. I only went to college because that's what jobs demand for practically any position.
At this point in time yes, but there needs to be some major overhauls to the school system including abolishing Common Core which is statistically ineffective.
That's really not true at all. Most careers out there require a college degree but most careers out there don't require them to be specifically a STEM unless that's what you go into. Plus now that so many people think STEM is the only good career field it's over saturated so you're going to have unbelievable amounts of competition and basically every job will be taken by people that graduated with a 4.33. Only do STEM if you actually enjoy the subject matter. Otherwise don't.
@Octavius false!!! There is actually a huge demand for software engineers, computer scientists, programmers, petroleum engineers than fluffy bullshit psychology and arts majors.
The market can and will change. I'm assuming you'll be going into STEM. Do you actually like math or are you just doing it for work? College is nowhere near worthless just because people don't do STEM. It can be if you major in something you don't like but even then you can still open a lot of doors to careers. So many successful people have careers in areas that are unrelated to their major but it still required a college education to get into.
@Octavius My opinion on that topic is very simple. If you are not good at calculus, physics and chemistry you should avoid STEM degrees and college. They should go to a good trade school.
I'm sorry you feel that way. A person can be good at those subjects and not enjoy them. Hell after biology majors English majors are the second highest group of people that go into med school. Teachers, writers, editors, a whole plethora of business areas (without even needing a degree in business) are available to those who major in something other than STEM. Yes college is about helping yourself get a job but it should be way more than just that. A huge part is simply learning to think critically and broadening your horizons not becoming more close minded.
@Octavius Nobody needs a worthless four-year English degree to think critically especially if your first language is already English!!! The vast majority of the successful premed students I know are majoring in useful stuff like pharmacology, biochemistry and even biomedical engineering. Most successful authors aren't English majors.
I have degrees in both STEM and humanities fields. I find that my STEM degree was absolutely necessary to get the job I have, but the humanities education really did teach me to think in a completely different, much more critical way. That's not to say you need college for that, but I think the likelihood of that happening without is fairly low.

I never went to college or high school because I wanted to avoid being bullied and I wanted to avoid drama and that's why I didn't go
I see you like to avoid high paying jobs too.
@nog642 I didn't avoid high paying jobs I can't get a job cause I'm special needs
what about the working force? bullying does exist in the working force so how do you deal with it?
@chriss I don't work and if I was bullied I could tell someone or try and deal with the bulling myself

I started laughing at number 1 because I thought this was a joke, but then as I kept reading I found out you were serious.
Maybe if you went to college for a few semesters you'd find out why I'm laughing and crying at this take.
Then you finish college... and then what?
I get a career, start making mad cash and buy a shark tank driveway. What awesome things will you do with your life?
Dream on dude. A degree doesn't mean you'll get mad cash. Chances are 1 out of 1000.
It's more possible you'll just work in a shitty 9 to 5 job, and get shitty cash. I know at least 10 people with degrees, who are like that.
Chances aren't 1/1000, more like 1/2 but it depends on what degree you get.
If you get a liberal arts degree no shil you'll endop working some shitty office job. But if you get the right degree you can get something good.
@nog642 Yeah half among total population are millionaires. Are you fucking serious?
A good doesn't mean a millionaire. It means a 6 figure salary.
And not half of the total population, half of the people with higher degrees.
@nog642 Get out of my question now kid. You're a pain in the ass. Go, go!
Sure. This thing's 11 days old now anyways.
If the chances were that bad then nobody would bother going to college. The average salary of someone with a simple Associate's in computer programming is 110,000. Also, this would have negated most of your argument because the US has the best Universities and worst public schools. So going to college in the US would definitely increase your education, intelligence and job success.

"Intelligence is a genetic thing, and even if you go to 100 different colleges it won't help. Don't be so stupid to believe that. Have you got any evidence?"
That is extremely hypocritical and ignorant because psychology is completely divided on whether intelligence is genetic or comes from environment. Intelligence is also subjective. Which any psychology textbook will agree on.

Pretty skewed logic. Whatever, the world needs janitors. I'm not going to get into it

@meowcow I don't drink beer. When I said that? I usually drink dry gin or clear rum.

Oh, god, thats fucked up man
Just keep getting drunk, if you like, but promise not to donate your brain to science, m'kay? You'll set us back 50 years.
@FallOutBoy2001

@Waffles731 I'm donating my organs, definitaly, my brain.
@FallOutBoy2001
One last act of goodwill on this earth before we pass into whatevers next
@Waffles731 yeah! If I can save someone else's life, I want to do that.
@FallOutBoy2001

@FallOutBoy2001 How can I donate my brain when I'm dead? It's technically impossible.
No. You arrange to have it donated before you die
@FallOutBoy2001 Nah what makes you believe I'd care to donate it? Would I earn any money for it? Even if I did I'd not be able to take them to the other world.
I don't know, maybe to help the research being done with it? Being useful for once.
Education is crucial. Some systems aren't perfect, but an imperfect education is better than no education.
How come?
Because being successful in our society depends on being educated. Without a major revolution that changes our entire social and political system and all of our lifestyles drastically, which frankly I have no desire for, there is no way for the next generation to be successful without a proper education.

@nog642 What makes you believe she's kissing a boss' ass? She's independent.
So are a bunch of other people. Who went to school. Like your mom did. And you didn't.
Also most likely she still has to appeal to whoever she's selling something to.
You don't get very far in life without kissing SOMEONE'S ass, be it a boss, customer, investor, or what have you. None of us are fully independent. Are you a believer in the unschooling philosphy? Just curious. Everything you say here points towards it.
Is it bad?
Not necessarily, but there are a lot of criticisms.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unschooling
No opinion on it?
Ah sorry but I was pretty drunk today and I'm not in the mood. But anyway this is the most important part of the article:

Overrated, it is.
High paying jobs are overrated? I don't know about you but I like money.
@nog642 You realize money don't appear via magic?
@nog642 I like money also
Who doesn't? But getting good grades in school doesn't equalize you'll be rich. Wake up.
@nog642 If you're over qualified nobody will higher you BECAUSE they will have to pay you more
You gotta hit that perfect point of qualification to get the job and be paid extra.
@nog642 "And they may work at a bunch of shitty jobs but in the end they get a good job. "
Not always
But if you don't go to school you almost always won't get a job or get a minimum wage job.
@nog642 Dude seriously you seem like to be the ultra-annoying kid who has "A" everywhere. In your case, I wish there is someone who's bullying you in school. I'm against bullying, as I mentioned, but in your case it's a must.
What do you mean by has "A" everywhere? Also no, I don't get bullied.
@nog642 Wish you should. Really.
I wouldn't give a crap if I was as long as it wasn't physical. Also you still haven't answered the question, what do you mean by has "A" everywhere?
@nog642 A grades
Oh. Well I don't get straight As but I get pretty good grades. More As than Bs and practically no Cs.
@nog642 Ha! I knew it...
Ok, so? That doesn't discredit my argument. If anything it backs it up.
@nog642 So? Just a perfect example to be you know what.
No I don't know what.
@nog642 Oh come on...
Nope...
Disagree with #1. Book smarts are important. They just shouldn't be the responsibility of teachers and professors.
Disagree with #6, it can certainly help.
Otherwise, I agree.
But why there are many antisocial people in school?
It isn't about what you learn, it's about how you apply the information you gain practically. You don't get marks in exams for spewing out trivia, you get it for articulating points and being able to go through information and derive meaning from it.
For most jobs school is completely useless. Some jobs and career fields require it like becoming a doctor or a job similar to that.
High school should be used to teach kids how to buy a house, invest, and know about stuff that will actually affect their life.
Most stuff in college is useless unless it's a certain career field your going into. I only went to college because that's what jobs demand for practically any position.
So how is Mom's basement working out for you?
Come again?
At this point in time yes, but there needs to be some major overhauls to the school system including abolishing Common Core which is statistically ineffective.
If you restore the car it can be driven again.
School taugh you nothing or did you learnt nothing?
Both.
I wasn't interested in most subjects to begin with.
that's why
"school is unimportant"... says the dude who learned how to write from going to school :/
"My personal answer is, only the basic things we learned during the first grades. Apart from those, nothing was helpful."
This guy got bullied and his orange juice box stolen when he was in elementary school xD
Did mommy and daddy give up on you? or are you a true fund kid?
School is necessary for STEM majors otherwise it's completely worthless.
I'd also say it can be useful for writers, accountants, and some other jobs
That's really not true at all. Most careers out there require a college degree but most careers out there don't require them to be specifically a STEM unless that's what you go into. Plus now that so many people think STEM is the only good career field it's over saturated so you're going to have unbelievable amounts of competition and basically every job will be taken by people that graduated with a 4.33. Only do STEM if you actually enjoy the subject matter. Otherwise don't.
@Octavius false!!! There is actually a huge demand for software engineers, computer scientists, programmers, petroleum engineers than fluffy bullshit psychology and arts majors.
@Octavius by the way all 4 of my brothers are engineers and they had multiple job offers lined up for them before graduation.
That's not to say you need college for that, but I think the likelihood of that happening without is fairly low.
school was only useful to me for learning how to read and write and car mechanics and welding.
ONLY for those eh? Good point. You got it right.
I wouldn't be where I am now if it weren't for school.
Booksmart eh?
