Remote work or work in the office?

Elon Musk thinks people should be in the office, and should work 80 hours per week.

The technology exists now to allow for remote work. Remote work expands the potential hiring pool for talent. If you think making people commute is a valid use of the most limited resource in their life (time) you are mistaken. A person having to get up at 7 am to be at a desk for 9 am is going to be less productive than a person getting up at 8.30 to start work at 9 AM.

because of the pandemia... I had to make my business work remotely

we had a building in place, and we did it all from there because well, it was the workplace, once the pandemia hit all of that changed dramatically

but we were able to communicate and set up most things remotely, or each part of the business could do their part on their own well enough and we just made it work

now that the pandemia is gone for the most part, we're still doing most things "remotely" because in terms of managing, it is possible for me to manage things but!!

in terms of supervision, it is a bit more complicated for me to supervise things personally and in the way I liked it, so I had to change that about myself, and to be more trusting of my coworkers... or myself, depends how you see it, because it is not that I lack trust for them because I trust them 1000% but me, I like to be sure sure 10000% sure of things... but well, I've managed myself into dealing with this properly and efficiently

maybe Musk is one of those who cannot let go of micro-managing and supervising everyone to a more extreme point and to a more closely judging eye, one on one...

You make good points. Also - if there are no workers in the building, that sort of makes it unnecessary to have a "boss" there at all, which then begs the question, "why have a boss at all?". I think people in manager roles have started to realize that the supervisorial functions are evaporating, and that worries them.

definitely true... for those in which their roles of management and supervision are not really that necessary, it will put them at risk and worry

and then you have other logistic issues arise, and since you mentioned the building... there's a lot of costs involved and bills have to paid, and it will definitely feel like a waste to pay for all that when nobody is there

personally, even with the office building/warehouse being mine, the costs can be reduced but they are still costs... I could be renting that place, but then I need it as a back up "just in case"

It might be that you will eventually get to the point where a virtual office is all you need...

about 80% of what we do, it can be done "virtually"

but this is only possible by the level of trust I have with my coworkers , now if this were to be a new venture for me, and newly hired people, I assure you there's no way I would ever do it remotely... I would do it the other way, I would want it to be 70% in person where I can supervise, and 30% remotely where I will just trust things are done the way they have to be

I think this where Musk is at currently, they're all new to each other so they just do not have that trust on one another, and how could you really?

Musk went there to take, not to lead... he literally took over a bunch of people he did not like nor trust in the first place

I can work from home, but it's also good to be in the same room as the people you work with, at least some of the time. Of course, I always had reasonable working hours with flexitime.

I do enjoy my remote days but office work is just much more efficient, especially for senior to junior knowledge transfer. It's also much easier to concentrate on work in the office than at home and issues like the VPN not working or bandwidth go away.

Now I do like virtual meetings more as I rarely have a big speaking role and can multitask.
