That’s preposterous. That’s actually one of my biggest gripes about living in the age of the mobile phone. You used to be allowed to be incommunicado without people questioning you. I am not obligated to be available to ANYONE, so that rule is fucked. I used to have a job that would sometimes schedule you as “on call”, and you’d have to call in like an hour early and see if they wanted you or not. That was a little annoying, but I could at least accept that, because I had an adequate heads up. Unless you’re paying me like 1%er money, you can go sit bare-assed on a cactus if you think I’m going to be just waiting around, ready to drop anything else I have going on just to make the owner or manager’s life easier? What have YOU done for ME lately? And don’t say my paycheck and my employment, I’ve already fairly traded my SCHEDULED time and effort for that money. Having to deal with managing that pretty universal (and correct) attitude in humans is just one of the many reasons I wouldn’t become a business owner. If you’re not into that kind of trouble, maybe owning a business just isn’t for you. But honestly, it’s usually some idiot middle manager trying to push this on you. Those are miserable, frustrated people mistakenly thinking they’re climbing a ladder to somewhere better, and it’s all being taken out on their employees.

All states except Montana are "at-will." Here's a link to a map and exceptions:

They can fire me then cause i absolutely ignore work calls when im off. Only my sporting good store and dept of ed would call asking me to come in. I’d ignore the call and if they asked the next day i was at work, i’d use the same excuse that i was outta town. Lol fck them
My phone is for my convenience, not theirs. If they want to pay my bill, I'll answer any time they call. Otherwise, GTFO!

I will not answer my phone or respond to emails/instant messages because they are not paying me to, as it’s my day off.
When I am responding to calls then I’m on the clock and they should pay me. I’ll keep track of all of my hours during that time. A day off is a day off.I live in an at-will state and this has never been an issue for me. But, if someone did call, it's my career for which I have trained and undertaken as a lifelong pursuit. So, why would I be bothered if someone called me? It's my life's work.
That may be possible. Even one in a million implies it is possible. However, possible doesn't imply it will ever happen to any given individual.
The American version of capitalism has been running amok for quite some time. The whole concept of "at will employment" is proof of that!
I could also key their car and slash their tires too so I've never had that happen to me lol
Well I don't know if this law applies to California but if it does they didn’t fire me. 😂
It might end up being costly for the company in court and reputation. And a court win due to individual details can effect a standing law.
Really? I know back home your boss isn't allowed to phone you.
I'm the only one, that doesn't mind getting phone calls on my days off? People must be really hating having to work for money.
Thank fuck we have work rights in the uk.
Not applicable to me.
I would say that I’m super far away from town.
