Why I'm a metalhead.

This is more of a playlist dump than a MyTake. So if you don't like extreme music you want to leave.

This is my music of choice.

Whenever people ask me what kind of music I'm into and I tell them I primarily listen to rock and metal music they always ask the same thing- Why?

Why would someone like me, the furthest thing from a booze-fueled, testosterone-laden hesher, have anything to do with heavy music? It comes down to how the music makes me feel. I like the aggression of it, and how it makes me feel a part of something.

I started listening to this kind of music way back when I was 11 years old. My father got a good-paying job in a town hours away from the one we were living in, so the whole family uprooted and moved. I went to a new school and knew absolutely nobody, I was the quiet kid and I was also going through puberty far earlier than my classmates. As you would imagine, the more established kids would pick on me horrendously.

I felt alone, isolated, and afraid.

Eventually, I did make friends at school, and one of those friends was a huge fan of stuff like Slipknot. She would show me some of the magazines with all these different bands and being the artistic type I was drawn to a lot of the artwork and the outlandish images some of the bands were trying to portray. In these bands and artists, I saw outcasts like me.

My new friend took note of my budding interest in Rock/Metal as well as the Goth subculture, so she eventually sent me a bunch of Limewire links (Oh Lord) via MSN Messenger for stuff like Slipknot (of course), old school Metallica, Slayer, Marilyn Manson, etc. Needless to say, I obliterated my parents' computer with viruses in my quest to consume a bunch of music they likely didn't approve of.

I've been through some serious shit since then, but this music that people claim a girl like me shouldn't enjoy has always helped me pull through the tough times and motivated me to give %110 in everything I set my mind to. If you ask me, growing up a metalhead has propelled me to where I am today.

Why I'm a metalhead.
