Why Did The Prisoners In Les Miserable Get The Hair Shaved, but Not The Beard?

I'm wondering why Jean Valjean and the other prisoners shaves off their hair and not the beard. Why couldn't they shave off the beard too? What's the logic behind it? If it was hygiene reasons, they could shave the beard off as well. #LesMiserable #Fashion #Slavery

In that time period, prisoners would have been shaved to prevent lice (which also carry disease, such as the Black Plague), and to prevent prisoners from hiding things in their hair (including beard hair).

The movie wasn't realistic - they made an artistic choice rather than strictly adhering to history.

I don't know about the book, but in the amazing stage musical this abomination of a movie is based on, the prisoners do not have shaved hair.
