Is portraying women as superheroes in cinema influenced by Hollywood's feminist elite to portray women as superior to men?
Please share your thoughts and/or take my survey... PLEASE!
Let's look back at movies like Alien/Aliens (Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley), or Terminator/T2 (Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor), or Star Wars (Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa) - hell, even Gal Gadot in the recent Wonder Woman - these were well-written, heroic female characters that EVERYONE loved. The characters all had flaws and weaknesses and weren't perfect or invincible, but they gritted their teeth and toughed out some incredibly difficult circumstances and succeeded. The actresses rightly won awards for these performance, and the movies were very popular.
Even some perhaps less famous but still well-loved movies/shows with strong female leads: Kill Bill, Jackie Brown, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the Resident Evil series, Fargo, Firefly/Serenity, Silence Of The Lambs, etc. all had well-written female characters and were fan favorites. The world does NOT have a problem with strong female characters!
BUT... there's been a growing movement over the last 25 years, with a major push about 10 years ago, and an even bigger push in the last 5 years or so, to make movies with female leads that are either perfect in every way, or at the very least superior in all ways to men - and specifically to rub that in people's faces. The final Star Wars trilogy features Rey, who is the very best at everything she does all the time, with powers no one has ever seen before. Suicide Squad/Birds Of Prey was awful feminist/identitarian trash. And maybe the worst of all is Brie Larson's Captain Marvel. All of these movies spend FAR more time pushing female superiority than they do on character development or plot advancement, and most people who went to see them - including tons of women - found them to be awful.
Then you have all of the "let's take old movies and shows starring men, and just replace key (or all the) characters with men." Ocean's 8 (which wasn't terrible, but really?), What Men Want, and of course, the horrific Ghostbusters remake. These again were all made NOT to make a great movie as much as to make a FEMALE movie - and specifically to show that women can do the male roles. But that's exactly the problem: we don't WANT women doing the male roles. We want women doing excellent FEMALE roles!
Yes, these movies are specifically made by far-leftists pushing identitarian politics, and it's blatantly obvious. It's also clear that making movies that way is a path to financial losses, as those movies have done poorly at the box office and they've mostly all lost money (The Force Awakens perhaps being the biggest exception, but it was a Star Wars movie back when people still cared about Star Wars, pre-JJ and Rian).
Few women live the same kind of lives and have the same kinds of struggles as men - but that doesn't make their lives and struggles less interesting, and tons of women have done very interesting, courageous, heroic, and groundbreaking things WHILE STILL BEING WOMEN - and why can we have THAT?
I saw Hidden Figures (2016), a movie about the not-well-known black female mathematicians who did vital calculations for NASA, working through ACTUAL racism and sexism in the 1960s to do so, and it was a great movie that showed how women - and women of color - made vital contributions to the Great Adventure of manned space missions. I can't imagine a more pro-female movie, and yet there was no "we're better than men" preaching or perfect, flawless characters.
One of my favorite movies is The Fifth Element - a movie like no other movie you've seen - with a very strong female lead who kicks ass - and people loved it because it was well-written and she just did what she had to do. The same director, Luc Besson, has written several other movies with strong female characters, including La Femme Nikita (remade in the US as The Point Of No Return) and Leon (renamed The Professional in the US).
As I said before, the public has no problems with strong female characters - so many movies with strong female characters are popular and financially successful - but we want female characters that are real characters and not perfect, flawless, can-do-anything-without-struggle characters, and we don't want to be preached at that "women are better than men in every possible way." That "woke" agenda will make those movies fail, and rightfully so.
I will say that I love a good female superhero! I love it! I embrace female roles in movies! But one movie did catch my eye...
There was not one good male role in this movie.
No male role model to look up to... It was all man bashing figuratively and literally.
I honestly loved suicide squad and I was looking forward to this movie only for it to be a celebration of womens triumph over men
I could almost hear Harley Quinn say to the girl character. Hey kid you will go far as long as you are not a man, men are as#ho#es
The is the sandwich maker and maybe maybe the guy that lets her live up stairs in the her apartment but then he just sells her out too...
You're welcome, thank you for another great opinion :)
No, thereâs a market of people who want to see more female heroes (in well rounded roles). Of course with that, there is a lot of pandering from the movie producers who use political plights for financial gain by planting ideas in where it is unnecessary and sometimes hiring writers and directors who may already feel strongly about certain things and want to include their opinions in their art.
It truly is not some large feminist conspiracy. Itâs just a matter of a chain of events that wouldnât be any different if the general public werenât as left-leaning. Might I suggest anyone pick up a piece of media from the 1950âs and earlier.
Nope, female superheroes have been around in comics for decades. They're superheroes so obviously they are going to be fighting Bad Men as well as Bad Women. The only difference I see is that in today's culture more attention is focused on it. It's made up, exaggerated fantasy, maybe the world would be a better place if it was reality. Then again maybe it wouldn't, the world will always be messed up as long as there is inequality of any kind 😁😁😁

Some lf these "girl power" type films of recent years aren't exactly shy about being overtly feminist and "not for men", as Brie Larsen infamously said of Captain Marvel, "straight white men, this film isn't for you". But that's hardly some alt right conspiracy theory, those filmmakers wear their feminist ideologies on their sleeves. But in terms lf the superhero genre specifically, I wouldn't know, coz superhero films stopped being fun for me like 10 years ago.
Superheroes usually represent a power fantasy of sorts, whether it's embodied by a male hero or a female hero. So in that sense, it's no surprise that a female superhero would kick ass like a male hero. Those films aren't meant to be accurate representations of reality. In the real world, a 110lb female will NEVER EVER beat up multiple male attackers who are twice her size. But going by "superhero logic" you kinda just have to go with it, coz they can just say "eh, she has super-strength coz a radioactive rat bit her on the ass" or something. I think fanbases start dividing when a character is portrayed as overpowered without a fitting justification, or without having an equivalent weakness. Nobody questions Superman shooting laser beams from his eyes and flying so fast time literally reverses-- because the lore establishes the nature of his powers, such that we understand the internal logic behind it. We willingly believe Thanos can fingersnap people out of existence because he spent an entire film hunting down mythical infinity stones that literally alter the cosmic fabric of existence. But with those powers there are costs and weaknesses, consequences too. Superman has his cryptonite. Thanos sacrifices the only family he ever had in order to realise the power of the stones. People come for the power fantasy, but they stay for the pathos and sacrifice and struggle against frailty that underlies every good hero's journey. The absence of these sacrifices and human weaknesses makes an already-OP superhero seem unrelatable, their powers unearned, their character hollow and one dimensional. And if you take poor writing like that, and add in a bunch of on-the-nose feminist ideology and cringey "haha men are dumb" dialogue scenes, and the end result is a crappy feminist cringe fest masquerading as mindless popcorn entertainment. Nobody complains about a strong female hero who EARNED her strength, and who has weaknesses to overcome, and has humanity underlying the ass-kicking. Its just good writing, regardless of gender.
I don't much care for silly super hero movies. But I don't think the increased presence of female super heroes is about feminism, it's just about money. Hollywood is about getting people into theaters. Period.
Wonder Woman was popular years ago. Guys thought she was sexy and joked about wanting to be tied up with her golden lasso and forced to tell the truth.
Today there are more female heroes in comic books and movies than ever. They are strong, yes, but they don't embody radical feminist values. Note that they have perfect, feminine-style hair and makeup, and their outfits are designed to feature their female "attributes". They remind me a lot of the genre of art you shared in you "D" option. What is that genre called, anyway? They feature large boobs, waspish waists, magnificent butts, and sexy thighs in B&D outfits. They also tend to be very flexible. They are idealized and exaggerated caricatures.
While they exude power, their feminine bodies are featured, just as male superhero bodies are idealized and their masculine qualities exaggerated. It's all tailored to be sexy. Sex sells.
So overall, female super heroes may appeal to girls (especially young tom boys) who want strong female role models, but a lot of guys find them sexy. And I'm sure a lot of girls find male super heroes sexy.
In the end, it sells movies and merchandise. It's cracks me up that people fall for that commercial shit. But I don't think the increase in female super heroes is an attempt by Hollywood to pander to feminists. It could both harm and benefit feminism because, while it portrays strong women, it also objectifies them and creates impossible to achieve standards for girls (and guys) who buy into that crap. Is it worse than Disney movies that portray girls being swept away by princes?
An equally subversive role model is the Disney image of a perfect little girly, girl meeting a prince, having a royal wedding, and living happily ever after in a luxurious castle.
I highly doubt Hollywood is attempting to demonstrate feminine superiority through these characters and their acts. More like they are pandering to one sex whilst still selling to the other sex. After all, look at the women chosen to portray these characters. They all bear the attractive face, A-typical slender yet curvy figure that is further accentuated by the ridiculous costumes they wear, and most of them appear to engage in nothing more than cardio and yoga to leave their gentle feminine appearances in tacked... all which are intended to continue to appeal towards their target audience at large, men.
Hollywood spins one notion in a veiled attempt to lightly appease the feminist element while at the same time demonstrating the old reality of, âsex sellsâ and keeping their male audience engaged and spending.
Hollywood isnât stupid as obviously it works to a degree on both ends of the spectrum on the largely oblivious to nuance audience. Meanwhile Hollywoods behind closed doors behavior continues as usual. What is striking is how Hollywood continues to fly under the radar as long as it occasionally sacrifices one of its own to appease the beast. I mean, it is an industry that is influential, but how many women are the head of any of these studios? That I am aware of, none. Yet the business world beyond through these studios and media conglomerates in general are all led by men. Where is the feminist outcry in this? There will not be any as this would lead to the snake eating its own tail... and why I shall always view any âmovementâ as the word movement implies as, âshitâ.
Bottomline. Hollywood is merely pandering as it always has since the rating system came about. If not for the rating system coming into existence the acting vocation would likely to have continued to attract a bunch of prancing perverts and sexual deviants that it historically had been comprised of and would have remained taboo and avoided by the population at large.
I mean... NO?
I can see Hollywood trying to increase the amount of female heros... But I doubt it's just too make it look like they're better then men...
Honestly it just feels like to me... There trying to be more inclusive to the superhero franchise...
Wemon enjoy this stuff too... And there just trying to give them something specific... Show that wemon can be strong too... And I'm sure expanding there sails demographic dissent hurt either...
But I never ones felt like it was too show that wemon were better... Ask me again when 90% of super hero movies are starting wemon for a female viewer... Then I'll reconsider my opinion...
Until then Ill 100% support more female superhero movies
The number one thing they're trying to do is make money, part of that is this woke culture from the left, part of it is there old comics that everyone can get behind regardless of your left or right. the one thing since about these women are all super women litany with extraordinary powers and not a 5'4 women with a sword fighting fully trained 6+ foot men which literally could not happen. Women want to feel empowered by these supernaturally strong women then go for it I don't see anything wrong with it but just know that this isn't real life it's like Harry Potter I would love to have gone to Hogwarts and be a wizard right now but that's not real life
It's just movies to bring all kind of audiences to the cinemas...
We all know the reality that men were always superior to women and by superior it doesn't mean that men are more important than women, it's just that men can do a lot more things but real men use their power to protect and provide for their girl and family and many women adores having such men because it's in their genes to submit to a man and follow, not because she is forced to, but because she loves it!
Feminists are trying their best to twist the facts and change the nature and the way we were created and born but they will fail!
Hollywood has gone woke. It is clearly an intentional direction. What are their motives? Probably virtue signaling is at the top. Profit is right behind it.
People are free to support what they like. So am I. We are living in a time of rapid change and one of those changes is that there are more sources for content. Networks are no longer the source of all major TV series and hollywood is no longer the only game in town. I have read articles about new industries starting up to produce movies that people want to see not material that they decide we should see with demographic quotas for gender, sexual identity and race
I welcome these new content providers that give us all a choice. I don't want any of my hard earned money going to support SJW/Woke agendas
Nah, most superheroes are men, the first superhero ever was a man, the leaders of various superhero teams are usually men.
So, it's totally wrong, it's like saying that portraying men as superheroes in cinema was "influenced by mgtow & incel elite to portray men as superior to women".
Women as superheroes just proves that men and women are equal, in movies, tv shows, cartoons, video games, comics etc.
There are normal humans - males and females,
There are superheroes - males and females,
There are super-villains - males and females.
Are the female characters overly abrasive?
Does the movie, comic, video game, etc seem to find a way to emphasize how strong and independent they are and how they don't need a man?
Does it always seem to remind the audience how she's a woman?
Is she desexualized? (This is a big one since feminists hate attractive women)
Is she constantly finding ways to talk about men's ineptitude?
Are there frequent scenes and interactions with the female leads in which men are portrayed as really sleazy, dumb, etc?
Do the female characters look butch? Usually these specific traits point to feminist influence within a said story whether its in a game, movie, comic book, etc.
I wouldn't go as far as to say the elitist feminists are working their way into movies.
But there is definitely a sense of forced "independent strong woman" that they put on these newer super heroine movies.
The problem I have with these forced feels is not the meaning or intentions behind them. But how much they draw away from the original characters they are supposed to portray themselves.
Literally no one goes into a super hero movie and thinks "Oh wow I hope the women are empowered and not dressed in sexy clothing" and more often than not people will see a "strong independent woman" scene in a movie and instead think "Yeah, we get it... but it wasn't necessary."
Again. Women, y'all have way more respect, empowerment and even rights, than you did sixty years ago. We have come soon far that these kinds of under the hood tactics, aren't necessary these days. These days everyone has a voice.
There are far more male superheroes than female superheroes, so no.
It's like these people want us to be happy with all superheroes being men. Even a minority of superheroes being women is enough to get these people thinking society is misandrist.
No I think itâs more Hollywood trying to capitalize on the current trend of female empowerment rather than Hollywood trying to push some misandrist agenda. Superhero movies in general do well, and so making movies about female superheroes will probably do well too. Itâs all about making money!
These characters were lifted from the comic book world where powerful female characters have existed for decades. I donât think Hollywood is trying to portray any kind of female superiority here. I think itâs just an effort to diversify the super hero lineup on screen. Not just the female characters but with a film like Black Panther as well. I think itâs great.
In the comic books, the female characters (just like the male ones) have flaws and weaknesses, and overcoming those flaws and weaknesses is what makes them relatable and interesting. In (many of the) the movie adaptions, these flaws and weaknesses are completely removed, because that doesn't fit the agenda, and the movies are written to make all men either stupid or evil or both, and the female hero constantly points out that she's better than the men. That's the issue we're talking about.
What you wrote is true of the GOOD scripts, like Wonder Woman, which was universally praised. But what I'm talking about is Captain Marvell, for example, where Brie Larson and the writer & director set out to make a feminist movie, told "straight white men" that it wasn't a movie for them, and then got upset when it undersold and got poor ratings.
@MrOracle âBeing a woman in a male-dominated industry sort of sucks, but it doesnât suck any more than being a woman in the world. My advice? Be terrifying.ââKelly Sue DeConnick, Captain Marvel comic book writer. Just taking it from one of the writers for captain marvel comics so... And Captain marvel really is just Op for the sake of been Op and she kinda don't have any flaws.
Any conspiracy is just a conspiracy to make money. The super hero genre itself is absurd fantasy on its face. The fact they show hot as hell women beating the shit out of guys 3X their size is just more fantasy. Ultimately, these superherochicks movies are just a form of "feminist masturbation" Even though 80% of women freeze in the face of violence and the few who do not and kick ass are usually bigger and uglier than their assailants means nothing. Women are not interested unless they can pretend they are all the things their propaganda tells them (That's why Women's Basketball has those long lines and packed arenas; that's why the female Ghostbusters Movie was such a box office smash hit!) I rarely see a film in a theater unless on a date (I prefer my home theater set up). If I'm on a date it is for access to her vagina which means watching a film she likes.
There have been female superheroes since the invention of superheros from the origonal xmen to wonderwoman. I think that Hollywood is just trying to make more profitable movies by using female superheroes as well as male superheroes to continue this superhero movie trend.
They're all comic book characters being portrayed in all these shows and movies. It's all action-adventure entertainment and an escape, not a public service announcement to real life. Just watch and enjoy the beautiful women bringing these characters to life on screen. 👍
I think it's to protray women as equal to men, to get more women staring in action movies and to get more women watching action movies.
Only problem is that women don't really want to see them and men don't want to watch a movie made for women. Women are over 50% of the population so they want that demographic so it will be a romcom of empowerment, more kids go to see movies than adults so it has to be under 18 and they need to keep the male audience interested.
Demographics are always gonna be a thing and yes shows and films of course revolve themselves around that. But that i ain't a knew thing... And has happened for ages. And well you either like it or you don't.
No, because there are male superheroes too, and they often cooperate with female superheroes - both in Justice League and Avengers, as well as in other superhero teams (e. g Masters Of The Universe, Watchmen, X-Men, Umbrella Academy etc).
On the other hand, there are also female supervillains, who are arch-enemies of both male and female superheroes.
I dont think it has to do with men at all. It's about representation. It's about little girls being able to look up at the big screen and see themselves, to see a strong, powerful, confident woman who saves the world and be able to emulate her.
