Once every few years I try to give the first Lord of the Rings film a try but I can never surpass the first hour. I hate that because I’m sure it has potential and I love Elijah Wood in other films. I started the Hobbit series last year but completely out of order. I’m wondering if I should do the same for LotR? I watched Battle of the Five Armies first and looooved the Dragon shit. Then this year I watched the first Hobbit and looooved all the other giant animal attacks. Today I’m watching the second one, Desolation of Smaug and so far my grandparents and I are really into it. We just surpassed the spider attack scene. I’m getting so many Harry Potter vibes lol (don’t hate me for comparing the two) and I love it!!! I bought the 6 pack of Hobbit/LotR about a month ago bt am just now opening it since I’m tired of the DVR recording 3 hour tv films. I don't know when I’ll give Lord of the Rings a try (for the 5th time), but man the Hobbit is on point and I’ve only seen each film once. I truly don’t watch this series for the character build like I did HP, but I do watch it for the animal action. And yea i’m lovin it. You can tell I don’t pay attention to the actual characters because it took 3 films before I learned ole boys name is Bilbo 😂🤣😭😩
I read the books in order. To me that means starting with The Hobbit. That was in the mid 70s.
Around the time the first movies came out, I had been wanting to read the books again for several years but hadn't gotten around to it. When the movies came out I didn't want to watch them before I read the books again.
By the time I read the books, all the movies were already out. I watched the movies in the order they were filmed, which was Lord of the Rings first and then The Hobbit movies.
I don't know what to recommend. Personally I thought that The Lord of the Rings did not give enough background information for people who had not read the books. It didn't even tell you what the ring was all about. It very quickly glossed it over and left out some of the most important background information.
I recommend reading the books first, or at least reading the Hobbit first. The Lord of the Rings books or movies can not truly be understood without the background from the Hobbit. I'm also tempted to say that the Hobbit book was better than The Lord of the Rings books. I definitely liked the main character in the Hobbit better.
If you just want a lot of action, then it doesn't matter. If you want to know what's going on, I suggest reading the books first. The movies skip a LOT - more action, less story. Don't get me wrong, I did like the movies, but they skipped a lot.
Just in the last week or so I've been wanting to watch the movies again. I was planning on getting them next time I go to the library next Tuesday. Maybe I'll try watching the Hobbit first this time.

So I can see maybe needing to watch the third of the LotR series first if you did it that way in the hobbit. The third was my favorite so I can see that being a great starting point if you don’t have the attention for the slow pace of the first movie. But you will get dropped in to a lot of drama. Really the first movie starts slow and ends hard then the second movie never really ends it just leads in to the third so they but they second movie is also kind of drawn out. So again the third should be a lot better for you in the LotR series.
i loved it and honestly hated the hobbit in the fact that it was bot nearly as true to the books as the LotR movies where. Vigo the guy who acts as Aragorn read the series three times over the ninety days the took to film those three movies. The detail they all poured in to the LotR series is unparalleled. And then ten years later they tried to reproduce that energy for the hobbit and then someone decided it needed to be as big and epic as the LotR movies and they ended up creating a new story. I loved the hobbit as its own movie but it was a disgrace to the name of Tolkien.
i am really glad though that you got through the hobbit series now! Congrats!!
Ocean films like soul surfer?
Waw you saw them late but better late than never. What you thought of Blade.
Lol I think LOTR showed on the TV and I glanced it many times.. I bake no interest to sit down and watch it... how long would it take to watch all in thr trilogy when you're busy lol.
I heard of hobbit , never seen, not interested and my take away is *pounds staff* "YOU SHALL NOT PASSSSSS" which I learned from a Wattpad novel dare with an author who would dare her readers to do crazy shih like to stand in front of a stranger, pound a staff or imaginary one and say that to report their reaction haha... great memories 😢
The first one. I enjoyed the second too, but it felt so drawn out... that river of questionable physics... the eagles not dropping them off at the mountain... the legolas slowmotion... the dragon tease for the third not being the ending of the second... I sound like a salty hater. But, seeing gollem was refreshing. Really loved that part

I read the books first time about 40 years ago. And a few more times since.
LOTR is extremely good, but I'd have liked it more with the ''missing'' chapters included.
As for ''the Hobbit'' - it never had been a ''trilogy''. The movies are thrilling and well made. But the original book has been RAPED.
The fighting scenes are just too lengthy, the ''love affair'' is a totally unnecessary insertion. The entire thing shouts: ''let's milk even more money out of our 'fans' :( ''
Tolkien would be extremely disappointed.
My mother absolutely loved Lord if the rings, she made us watch all the films in theaters. Even though I like fantasy myself, I admit I didn't fully know what was going on in the films other than the fact the ring was evil and spigel (forgot how to spell his name) thought it was precious.
Lord of the Rings. No contest. Like I LOVE the Hobbit films but LOTR is just THAT good.
I spent 100$ on the 32 disc special blu-ray extended edition box set. All 6 movies, all the extras and behind the scenes, in HIGH DEFINITION 😁. I watch all 6 movies at least 5 times a year. Literally my favorite movies of all time.I was the same way with LoTRs where I could not get past an hour of the first movie. I tried watching it every few months. I finished the trilogy a week or so ago and I loved it. Im glad I gave it another chance.
The Fellowship of the Ring novel is like 2x the length of The Hobbit yet they stretched it into three mediocre movies. They also left out a huge section with the character Tom Bombadil.
Having read & studied the novels I don’t like them. Everything that’s important must be descended from royalty. Gandalf finds a sword. Oh its the sword of some king. Gets a horse oh ya king of all horses…. Meets eagles you guessed it king of all eagles.
I wrote an essay saying Gandalf was actually the villain. Takes advantage of these simpleton cabe dwellers and uses them to transport a weapon of mass destruction.
I enjoyed The Hobbit, but I'm not a nitpicker who demands cinematic perfection, along with 100% book accuracy. 😁 I still enjoyed the movies and connected with some of the characters... But Lord of the Rings is the bestest.
My FAVORITE trilogy though, is the Mummy movies with Brenden Fraser. Even though the third (Tomb of the Dragon Emperor) barely even counts for a third, the first 2 are good enough to qualify the series as one of the greatest in the history of the world and anyone who disagrees with me is just wrong and that's all there is to it. lol.
Weirdly enough, I watched the hobbit.. I thought they were fun movies.. I enjoyed them enough.. I do wanna watch Lord of The Rings One day though..
I preferred the Lord of the Rings, perhaps because I had read it more recently (a decade beforehand).
Lord of the Rings was better of the two. Vigo Mortenson was awesome as Aragorn and really carried a lot of the trilogy.
I haven’t watched either. The trilogies I like: Jason Bourne, John Wick, Austin Powers, Die Hard, Terminator, Star Wars, Star Trek, The Dollars, Lethal Weapon and Death Wish (the original) to name a few…..
LotR, I tried watching Hobbit with my ex last year but honestly I slept through the movies and if I was awake.. we were busy... soo yeah
You should give guardians of galaxy a try tho It's pretty funny and also all the marvel movies are connected sooI like the LOTR trilogy a bit more, both are good tho.
I've only seen the first Guardians of the Galaxy. I enjoyed it, but for some reason i didn't watch the other Guardian movies.
Some movies are just not for your taste, nothing you can really do about that.
I'm like that with Star Trek, but i can see why people like it.As with the books LOTR was better than the Hobbit but still enjoyed both.
I like them both, but I think The Hobbit was slightly better despite it’s flaws. Frodo and Co. were kindof annoying in the originals.
I’ve never tried the Hobbit series.
I was in the same boat as you in Lord of the Rings until a few years ago when I gave it a try again. It was a fun series once I got into it
For me, it's the opposite. LotR is way more enjoyable to me than Hobbit. It's a masterpiece in some parts, whereas Hobbit feels like a way over the top cgi marathon with no depth or substance to it. I also think the characters and acting are better in LotR.
However, it might also be a matter of personal preference and I might be kinda biased, as these movies are part of my childhood in a way and I've watched them so many times
Lord of the Rings was filmed a lot better, I should know I am from New Zealand, The Hobbit left to many questions and had too many subplots.
I'm looking forward to the new LOTR tv series when it comes out which will lead up to The original trilogy
I have watched LOTR trilogy, very good movies. I couldn't find enough interest in The Hobbit trilogy. So i have seen partas of it and that's all.
I really enjoyed watching LOTR. No doubt its the best. But i am also a fan of The Matrix trilogy.
I liked all 6 movies, but I liked the hobbit movies more for the most part.
