It's because Pokemon is incredibly deep and complex and involves a surprising lot of math. There's literally money and "fame" (e-fame) involved with winning Pokemon tournaments. And considering tens of millions of people play this game, then yeah. It's going to be competitive.
I won Pokemon tournaments in the past (gen 1 and 2, not anything recent or remotely new), so that's going to create competition. It doesn't matter what that competition is in or not. Chess can also be considered "a children's game." Should people not take that seriously, either. Hell ALL OF SPORTS are games little children can play. They're literal games worth multi-billon dollars, including the World Cup right now, and I care more about Pokemon than the world's most boring sport, soccer. Should people not be the best in that, as well?
I do agree with everyone else though that you've got a stick up your ass, in addition to sounding like a loser who'd rather criticize others for something they themselves can't do (be a winner/the best at something.) What kind of loser says "it's bad to be good at something"? Are you a Participation Trophy kid or something? When even *I* think you're being too negative, then you've got a real problem.

Asker+1 yCompetitive ruins video games, especially games that were originally made for kids. It promotes toxicity, competitiveness, and honestly every thing that’s bad on the internet. Pokemon, It’s not some stupid fps or moba game that’s only on free pc formats. it’s a popular franchise, originally made boys and girls aka kids. Adults ruined it by putting competition in it.
Asker+1 yDEEP AND COMPLEX? ITS A KIDS GAME
Asker+1 yI played Pokémon my whole life, i never played competitive cuz it’s stupid, competitive is stupid asf. It’s full of toxic a**holes who don’t have a life.
Asker+1 yI play Pokémon as a fun casual game ever since i was a kid. Competitive people can just shove whatever competitiveness they have up their A** cuz. I never said it was bad to be good at something. But then people online never listen so. I never did anything competitive, cuz i think competitive things suck. I don’t compete with people cuz it’s pointless. It’s for people who have something to prove.

Yup; you're a Participation Trophy Zoomer who lacks any bit of testosterone whatsoever and unironically uses words like "toxicity." You're in no position to judge anyone and clearly have never won anything in your entire young life.
Also, I'm 36 and have been playing Pokemon since age ten and still play it to this day. I have Yellow and Crystal version on Virtual Console, a ton of fan ROMS on my PC, and downloaded some fan ROM hacks, like Renegade Platinum onto my actual 3DS via an R4 Card. Hell, I've even designed my own ROM hack before, including my own Pokemon starters. I'm much more of a fan than you are.![Why Do people make Pokémon into a competitive game?]()

I haven't done competitive battling since generation 2, which was Gold, Silver, and Crystal, which were primitives by todays games.
But I've already expressed all the reasons why your argument is stupid. I don't need to repeat them. But the one point I forgot to add is that there is nothing exclusive about both fun and competition. Your argument asserts that you can't be competitive while still having fun with the game, which is BS.
Asker+1 yFps games and pc gaming are the most toxic competitive scenes in the world. People can’t see that at all. They’re blind to it. Thats why it always gets worse. I played Pokémon casually. I was 8 back then and It was my way to have fun. That’s different from playing competitively cuz i never play competitively. It gets you nowhere except giving you stress and headaches and makes you want to quit.
Asker+1 yI Played every single Pokémon game, winning something gets you nowhere unless the prize benefits you. For example, competitions where you earn money now that’s worth it but other than that, competition is a waste of time.

I'm sorry, but this 👆 is hilarious. 😂 - +1 y
@MCheetah Give it up; he's one of those people that thinks that just because HE doesn't like something, then nobody else should, either.
You'll never be able to convince him that he's an ass. He talks about "toxic" behavior, but literally the only person being "toxic" is him.
Asker+1 y@God_of_Thunder you obviously have no idea how toxic the competitive scene is. Play more multiplayer online games, then you’ll understand. Unless ofc you’re immature as well then you’ll never understand cuz you need at least 70% maturity to understand what toxicity is. You really want to teach kids that?
- +1 y
Lmao, you're the one whining about how other people play a game, and I'm the one that's immature?
There's so much irony in that statement that I'm suprised you don't choke on it. 😂😂😂 - +1 y
@MCheetah No worries; I knew who it was directed at. 👍

+1 yThe who point of the games, from the minute your character wakes up at the beginning of Pokemon Red, is to compete, and become the best.
It's literally in the tv show's theme song. Heaven forbid some people actually took it seriously, to it's logical conclusion. Regardless of whether you think it ruins the game, those people actually think it enhances the experience.
You do know that you don't have to play competetively, right? Kids are allowed to play the game for fun. I've heard of children that actually enjoy Pokemon, despite the fact that there are competetive tournaments.
Talk about a non-issue, geez.

Asker+1 yI don’t play competitively, period, but it’s annoying that they make a kids game competitive. This isn’t some shit fps or mobile game that you can just ruin with your toxic competitiveness. It was originally supposed to be fun and for kids. But apparently adults came into the mix and put competitive and online into it.
Asker+1 yAlso if you have a problem with my post, you could’ve just not responded to my post in the first place.
- +1 y
My "problem" is you complaining about something that shouldn't even be an issue, and I don't understand why you're making it one.
If you don't want to play competetively, then don't play competetively. It's not that difficult of a concept. I fail to see how other people playing competetively has any effect, whatsoever, on a child's enjoyment of the game.
Just because some people want to play competetively, doesn't preclude children from playing the game for fun. One has nothing to do with the other.
That's like saying the NBA is toxic, because it prevents kids from playing driveway basketball. It does nothing of the sort.
The only "toxic" thing here, is you. Just because a group of people want to play a game in a way that you don't approve of, you're making an issue out of it.
That is what my problem is.
Asker+1 yI don’t see why you care so much about what i posted. The fact that you care this much about my post makes me wonder about your mental growth and age. Cuz you could’ve just easily just move on and ignored my post if you had a problem with it but no like everyone else on the internet, you have a urge to try to teach a lesson even tho it’s none of your business.
- +1 y
And I don't see why you have such a problem with how other people play the game when it doesn't have any effect on you?
I used to play competetively, because I enjoyed it. It was fun for me. You're insinuating that my playing the way that I played was somehow toxic to other people.
That's insulting to me, and I take offense to that. Hence, my problem with what you posted. You implied that I somehow negatively impacted your enjoyment of the game, which is pure BS.
Asker+1 y@God_of_Thunder you obviously have no idea how toxic the competitive scene is. Play more multiplayer online games, then you’ll understand. Asker+1 yTry playing valorant, it’s a ton of toxicity on there. Especially league, every single multiplayer online game there is
- +1 y
And you're making assumptions about things you know nothing about.
I've been playing video games since long before you were born. I'm well aware of both casual & competetive gameplay. I also know how to keep them completely separate from one another.
I'll say it again: if you don't want to play competetively, then don't. Nobody is forcing you to. Trying to say that other people shouldn't, though, just because you don't like it, makes you an ass.
Why should you be allowed to dictate what others do, just because you don't like it? The arrogance is astonishing.
Asker+1 yThe fact that you care enough to be toxic to me proves your immaturity
Asker+1 yI’m done here, grow up, you’re already 38

Every single person here has responded civilly to your question, but with opinions that contradict your own, and you've jumped down the throat of every single one of us. Yet you've called all of us "jerks," "immature," and told us all to "grow up."
I actually feel sorry for you. The fact that you think we're the toxic ones, when the only person being immature is yourself, is sad. I sincerely hope that you learn how to express yourself in a more positive manner, because you're only making yourself look bad, not us.
I'm not going to waste any more time arguing with you.

If somebody wants a consequence free competition, let them have it.

Asker+1 yMy god, so much hatred. What’s wrong with you. You into stereotypes cuz that’s what you are being, stereotypical. Just because someone likes Pokémon or something made for children doesn’t mean he hasn’t grown up, why are you so hateful?
- +1 y
As a wise man once said “When I was a child, I thought like a child, I acted like a child, and I played as a child. But when I became a man, I put away childish things!” There is no “hatred”, just a personal preference that adults I become romantically involved with, actually act like adults! I’ve been very privileged to be able to travel to quite a few foreign countries, even living in England until i was 6 and I have never seen anywhere else where so many men suffer from “Peter Pan syndrome”. I don’t hate these men, I feel sorry for them. You seem to be confusing garden variety apathy with a bit of mild pity for hatred. I really do not hate anyone, hate is WAY to strong of an emotion to waste on someone I could not possibly care less about.
Also, by definition if a man plays with something intended for children, and young children at that, then he cannot possibly have grown up. Oh, and I DO make a distinction between collecting rare and valuable cards, and ACTUALLY playing the game.

+1 yPokmeon has always been a competitive in nature. It was designed to make you work and build a team to compete. To be the best like no one ever was. It still has the kids game aspect to it for casual gamers which is fine but there are some that like to test the progress of their in game efforts. I am in no means a competitive player but I see nothing wrong with people taking a game that has been around for over 20 years and being played to its limits

I did read the whole post, but what you fail to realize is that Pokémon as a whole is supposed to be being the best Pokémon trainer. Being the best means competition and without competition there is no point to the game. Are there people who go overboard? Yes, however you get that with any game that revolves around multiple people and only one winner can come about.
Either learn to deal with it or quit. That's all there is.
Asker+1 yCompetitive ruins video games, especially games that were originally made for kids. It promotes toxicity, competitiveness, and honestly every thing that’s bad on the internet. I played the games too, much like others. However, you have this thing called CHOICE. My statement holds truth and still stands. It doesn't matter if it is a sport, Pokémon, Beyblde, Yu-Gi-Oh, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Mortal Kombat, Smash Bros, etc. They are all games centered around playing others to test your skill and enjoy it.
YOU have a personal choice to play competitive or not with those games. YOU can control how you feel about it. YOU can choose who you play the games with. This isn't hard.
You think I enjoy running into trolling trick shot turds or knife only users when I play Call of Duty? No. But I still deal with it and learn to adapt to play and get better. That's the point. There is nothing toxic about competition. Competition is what makes people grow stronger and desire to be better. And I am not referring to games right now. This is a life lesson.
If you are not challenging yourself and trying to grow as a person, you will flounder and remain stagnant and complacent. That is not a way to live life and life will not reward you if you stay mediocre.
You understand how hypocritical you sound when you say you played a game your whole life and say competition is toxic to because of those who played the game like you being competitive is? Do you not have a life as well by those means and are you not being toxic with your rant right here? I would suggest you either learn to let this go and learn to deal with it or else quit and move on.
Asker+1 yYou must’ve never played competitive long enough if you’re saying it’s not toxic. You play COD, fps games are the most toxic and immature.
Asker+1 yNo matter what game i play, i Play for fun, not for competitive, cuz it’s pointless. You realize you could’ve just not answered my post in the first place. I don't know why if you have such a problem with it. I Played Pokémon casual. It was a way to have fun. That’s different from playing competitively cuz i never play competitively.

I never said it wasn't toxic, because there is. If you actually read my replies you would see I said toxicity is in every game. You have the choice to deal with it, and my words are clearly falling on deaf ears and blind eyes with you.
I HAVE played competitive Pokémon growing up. I was good and I only got good because I wanted to beat the people who were toxic and those that were better than me. It was a goal and achievement that I reached. That is the difference between you and me.
I actually embraced it, you flee from it. ✌️
Asker+1 yITS A KIDS GAME!! IDGAF ABOUT BEING GOOD AT A GAME THATS ULTIMATELY A KIDS GAME. I PLAY GAMES FOR FUN. ITS A WAY FOR ME TO UNWIND FROM STRESS.

By the way. If you post something on here or any public forum for that matter, you are opening yourself to be commented on like I did here along with others. Same concept. Learn to deal with different opinions and people who won't feed you answers that you want to hear.
Asker+1 yOr you could just learn to not answer every question you see.
Asker+1 yThe toxic competitive scene is the reason i quit playing games like Valorant and Any Online multiplayer game. Cuz i was just hurting myself by being a game with toxic immature a**holes who probably had no life
- +1 y
And once again, your mindset only proves the difference between us. I deal with it, you run from it. Once again. No life? Pretty sure you don't have much of one either if you are playing all these games and quitting because you hate competition.
Video games do work as stress relief and fun if you allow it, but you are letting toxicity dictate how you play and feel. You have a choice, you just refuse to deal with it and opt to shift blame on others. Either take responsibility or don't and stay stagnant, man.
Asker+1 yI have a life. People online are such jerks. Can’t have a civil conversation without being a dick.
Asker+1 yYou’re such a jerk. Grow up and learn to be a better person
