Not in the least. The goal was to get the bulk of the consumer base to move to a platform that the creators had control over, with less FCC supervision and no Neilsen ratings, so they can say whatever they want about ratings and viewership, and no one will have the information to contest it. It's all about consolidation of power.
That used to be the point of having satellite/cable TV, so you didn't see commercials. Now, unless you pay them $15 a month not to see commercials. you get them like every 10 minutes. And that is not all of them, as each charges you money. So by the time you pay for all these apps, like Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Peacock, and others, you may just as well get something like Dish.
If you are so lazy and tight with money that you want to stream everything, then deal with the ads and shut up. 🤣
I said it's not ridiculous, because I am an American... so I this how capitalism works. Its not that I like it all that much... but the idea that the internet is free is false. Its and industry, and therefore during down turns in the economy they will find ways to squeeze you out or make you pay.
So, it's not ridiculous, it's just infuriating.

I've never done streaming, but I just assumed this is what would eventually happen, because corporations are greedy AF. Nothing is ever enough. Regardless, it is a slap in the face that they'd have their customers sit through commercials, just because they want to make more money. Especially given the fact that streaming inherently had no commercials to begin with, which was part of the attraction of it.
However, I just knew over time that streaming services would eventually introduce commercials, because their lower monthly fees (compared to cable) was just a longterm ploy to get people on board and used to it before they introduced commercials onto their platforms. But as long as it remains cheaper than cable, people will put up with it (whether they like it or not), because they have no other option to choose. Because once one company starts doing it, they ALL will eventually. Mark my word. It'll just become the new norm. Just wait until they start showing even more ads... it's coming.
But over time, it's not like streaming services were going to turn down the opportunity to make even more money with the type of ad revenue cable makes. I just saw this as an eventuality. Bottom line is: never, and I mean NEVER make the assumption that corporations will not want to make even more money eventually. Given enough time, they'll get it one way or another. These kind of eventualities are a virtual guarantee that is baked into the proverbial corporate cake.

But it's an addiction, and a widely accepted pastime regardless of the ill effects. People will keep on watching it and keep getting dumber. So eventually they may end up paying to watch nothing but ads.
So as a business woman, this is a good idea. Because- listen, let me say I'm ms. rose of the uuuh production department or whatevea', I gotta help netflix make money. How about we rid of the ads... for $40 a month? Whaddya mean it's too much? It's fine! They'll pay that much! Okay, okay, okay... uuuuh...$8... FINE YOU EMPATHETIC SON OF A- $5! $5? Good, done deal, very good. Now we need to tell everyone.
Sooo if you don't like having a bathroom break or checking if timmy is watching you from the stairs, you can pay $5 to kill the ads and stuff.

Not really. They have expenses, and if the fees are not sufficient to cover them they either raise them and/or increase revenue via ads, or go out of business.
