Disney has recently lost $1 billion on their 2023 moves and on top of that Wish is tanking hard. It could add hundreds of millions more in losses. Disney is trying to save Snow White but that will take a lot of money to reshoot scenes and redo the movie just as it did when they tried to fix Solo with Ron Howard as their new director.

Disney stock holders are getting pulled through the mud with no end in sight. The movies should be making money, not losing money.

Finally, Bob Iger gets what we have been saying.

This is a very popular French (now online) newspaper Le Monde, which means World. Iger gets it but he needs to fire the people who will not stop, which has been the problem as they know what they have been creating is not what people want… its what THEY want and they won’t stop.

I think it's distasteful on their part. It's as if trying to impress people with their wokeness. At least when I'm writing a character in one of my books, I create the character how I want them to be... and not because I feel like I should be impressing certain people. Someone asked me once if I had a gay character and I said no, but it's not because I don't want to, but because I just haven't come up with a gay character yet. I have a bi-sexual character, but only because that's how I want the character to be.

I think these motion picture companies are going too far with the woke stuff. Then everything is politically incorrect anymore. Doctor's offices aren't allowed using gender or they get sued or lose their medical license. I think everyone is different and unique, and that's a wonderful thing, but those people taking offense because someone calls them a boy or a girl, and then causing people to lose their jobs over it, so ridiculous.

When I was a little boy, Disney had some great movies, but whoever is operating that company has ruined what others spent years to build. The world's getting too soft for me!

Disney forgot that its movies are to entertain and make money. They do neither at this point. It seems haphazard and shoddy while at the same time catering to a small group of people who do not buy enough tickets nor have children which will be Disney’s future. Who do they think they are, really. They took an un-killable brand and killed it, now that takes work to do. 80 years of magic and 20 years of decline. They may have to sell of the movie house so that the rest of Disney can succeed.

Woah, that's crazy about Disney losing so much money recently with their movies. As a shareholder, I'd be worried to see the brand going broke like that.

Some thoughts on what could be happening:

- Their recent movies do seem pretty woke with all the forced diversity and politics. Maybe audiences just wanna escape that stuff in entertainment.

- Disney used to make magical movies everyone loved, young and old. Now it feels like they're just pandering to Twitter mobs.

- Remaking classics like Snow White is risky too. Part of what made the originals special was the time period and should be left alone as classics. Messing with that could backfire.

- Re-shoots and delays must be costing a fortune too. Not a good sign if they have to keep fixing movies.

- Competition like Marvel is killing it, while Disney struggles. Seems like they lost their magic touch.

Hopefully the executives realize they need to get back to what made Disney great - fun stories for all, not wokeness. Otherwise the losses could sink the whole company long-term. As a shareholder, I'd be urging them to change course ASAP before it's too late. Go woke, go broke I guess!

I was actually kinda looking forward to that one. Ms. Marvel was cool in her show. But if the box office numbers were that bad, something must've not connected with audiences.

I know the last few Marvel movies introduced some woke stuff and divided the fanbase. Wonder if that played a part. Or people just Marveled out after so many movies back-to-back.

Still, for it to flop that hard is a head-scratcher. Thought Brie Larson's star power alone would draw folks in. Guess even the mighty MCU isn't immune to course corrections.

Disney definitely ain't happy if their cash cow is sputtering. They'll be rethinking strategies big time after this. Roll back the wokeness maybe? Develop new franchises?

Crazy times in the movie industry, man. Nothin's guaranteed anymore. Guess we'll see how Disney handles the fallout and if they can get Marvel firing on all cylinders again.

@Jersey2 Disney is certainly losing its reputation as being a money-making machine. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, all the movie studios have suffered due to decreased attendence at movie theaters. Disney has been especially hit hard because during the pandemic, it released movies too quickly to its Disney Plus streaming service, which “trained” potential moviegoers to wait until the movie they wanted to see was available for streaming.

Disney also got to greedy by overproducing Star Wars and Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and shows. As a result, the quality of these productions dropped, and audiences began to sufferer from franchise fatigue.

However, I don’t think that people have lost interest in the Disney brand because it has been featuring characters that are not all white and straight. Former Marvel Entertainment chairman Ike Perlmutter long resisted Disney putting out any Marvel movies that featured black or female superheroes. But then Black Panther and Captain Marvel came out, and these two “woke” films earned over $1 billion each at the box office. Of course, that was before the pandemic.

I am wary of Disney movies because I don’t want to pay money and spend 2 hours being preached to by Disney on whatever social or political point of view they have.

I think the same would be true of liberals not wanting to hear about Donald Trump’s point of view in movies. Would they really pay and spend time at a movie about building a wall and holding back an influx of people. Trump could rise up through the masses to power based on gathering followers through passionate speeches. Push aside the incompetent and self serving government to build the wall with loud cheers as the final gate is shut.

I think wokeness takes a big chunk in general tiredness of Disney movies and tv shows, but another part is omnipresent nepotism in entertainment branch. I mean people want just easy sinecures and have not talent to create something new and interesting for the viewership. Even interesting content of some TV shows is diluted for 8 of 12 episodes instead of 2. (The Mandalorian)
In other shows it's just repeating of content, like story told by an alcoholic. This mixed with wokeness and US divide et impera propaganda makes Disney productions really boring.

I don’t think every movie boils down to politics. Oppenheimer had a wide appeal but was neutral politically. Disney embraces political ideology and wants to be on the forefront but by doing so they alienate large groups of customers. They have done that so often now that the red ink and the brand damage are catching up to them. I wouldn’t be surprised if this turns into a Harvard Business Review in the future. Its a slow moving train wreck.

Basically once Disney put out "The Last Jedi" and they utterly ruined and destroyed Star Wars and they bought Marvel I've loathed Disney. Then instead of coming up with new stories they just re-do and have live action of all of their old stories and start playing identity/race politics with the cast I've been done.

End Game ended the Marvels saga for me and I'm not interested in Moon Night, or Miss Marvel or She Hulk, The Eternals or any of this other crap they are putting out.

I will never see anything Star Wars again. The Last Jedi was it for me. I consider Star Wars over. It ended with Revenge of the Sith, the last GEORGE LUCAS film. Nothing Disney puts out is really Star Wars, it is just a "cover band" imitation and I reject it all. None of it ever even happened as far as I'm concerned.

For me personally, I am done with Disney.

Into check out when I saw The Last Jedi. I walked out into the parking lot that night I said, this is unfixable. They tried to fix it but its a mess. That was the movie that broke my Disney trance as far as movies goes. I had been a huge Disney fan. Nostalgia is what continues to propel them and their parks and cruise line. That will wear off as more people come out of the trace, perhaps Snow White will wake up more people.

I agree also, so to a point. After seeing The Last Jedi (which was the last thing of Disney Star Wars I ever saw as I was 100% done. I won't watch anything else, didn't see Solo, Episode 9 or anything on streaming) it made me retroactively dislike the Force Awakens. I thought it was ok (not great) the first time I saw it but there were huge problems with it that didn't jump out at me at first that forced Ryan Johnson's hand. Abrams brought back the Empire by creating the First Order, Abrams made Luke disappear to an island, he mysteriously brought back Luke's light saber and didn't explain it, made up some mystery about Rea's background and parents, he killed Han in the first act of a 3-piece story and took away Luke, Leia and Han having any scenes together and took away the passing of the baton of the old characters to the new heroes that should occur in the 3rd act.
The Last Jedi was awful but Episode 7 got the ball rolling to ruin all Lucas had created.

America is going through a very bad crisis of character right now. A lot of people seem REALLY committed to being hateful, and they wear it like it’s a badge of honor. The old versions are still out there if you prefer those. Almost everything in American media from the beginning of radio shows all the way up through TV and movies in the 1990s, and to a lesser degree, the early 2000s, was more or less made BY white people, FOR white people. It wasn’t until the 70s and 80s that you could really say anything was made for anyone else, once you started getting into Good Times, The Jeffersons, Sanford & Son, etc (most if not all still probably made by and/or to the standards of white people) that could be considered more relatable to non-white audiences, specifically black audiences.

As a white kid growing up, I never had to search for anyone who looked like me on TV, in movies, the toys I played with. That’s probably something white people just take for granted, I know I did. My girlfriend is Latina, and she didn’t get that same experience, and it had some measure of an effect on her and the way she grew up perceiving herself in the world. No one is saying “no white people allowed on TV anymore”, we’re just trying to be more inclusive for the sake of being representative of real life. When I walk out my door everyday, not everyone is white. In fact, a significant portion of people I pass by in a day aren’t. It’s whatever, I don’t pay it much mind, I’m just saying it’s part of the natural landscape, so what’s wrong with media being more inclusive. Bottom line: life in America isn’t always about, solely about, or more about white people. Let’s just be accommodating of everybody, I don’t understand why that’s any sort of problem.

Race is non-essential to Ariel the Mermaid or Snow White, despite the character’s name. White people just never seem to grasp or want to grasp that the societal dynamic is just different so the rules aren’t 100% 1-to-1.

I don’t get what is so political about a media company trying to produce modernized versions of things that either reinvent a character with a different physical appearance (or just open the role to any actor instead of just one that fit the original cartoonist’s impression), or to rewrite the story a bit to clean up some things that we’ve hopefully evolved past as a species in the past century-plus when these things were originally written. Is that going to make someone vote differently?

These are fictional characters, we don’t have have a Samoan playing George Washington or some other historical figure. THAT would be weird, just on account of it not being accurate to real life. But there are no real life mermaids and no real life Snow White. You can have a grizzly bear play the role, it doesn’t matter. What do think the “sinister” motive is?

Japan is a very homogenous society. Most societies are. We happen to be in one of the particularly heterogeneous ones, so we have to be accommodating to that in order to not be dickheads. I wouldn’t expect white people on Nigerian TV or Iranian TV or Colombian TV because those are homogenous societies.

I keep hearing this argument, about little girls not having a person to look up to in media that is the same skin color as them. I’m Asian. Not a ton of famous Asian singers when I grew up. I didn’t give it two seconds thought. I loved Shania Twain and Tina Turner. I look nothing like those women. Who gives a flying F? Little girls should not be taught that they need to find someone that looks like them in order to find a person relatable enough to go for their dreams. You don’t say, “hey, you want to be a singer? Make sure to find someone who looks like you to idolize first, otherwise forget about it. Because, you’ll never be able to relate to someone enough to follow your dreams if you don’t have the same skin color”. You teach them, “look at that human being. Learn from them. How did they get where they are?”

Its interesting how fictional characters that are created as white (in this example Snow White) can be race swapped, but other fictional characters like Black panther can’’t. If they can change the "skin as white as snow" part of the story, then surely they can change whatever made it necessary for Black panther to be black? Another example would be Nani in the upcomming Lilo & Stitch remakes. Whiners throw a hissy fit the hawaiian actress playing her is not brown enough.

I’d just say that while it might not have meant anything to you, it meant a lot to my lady to see someone like Jennifer Lopez, not because she wanted to be a singer or a dancer or an actress, but it just made her feel good to see someone like her, in light of what her life experience was like with regard to being singled out or treated as “other.” Growing up in NYC, she was surrounded by people like her. She moved to the suburbs in high school, suddenly she’s getting teased by white kids about things related to her race, or more just broadly bring attention to it like “you’re not white, and that’s different.” I can’t say how everyone would respond to it, but it was hurtful to her, and just made her feel like she’s an outlier in a white world. So for her, Jennifer Lopez was a hero and reminder that a Latina can be positively regarded in a predominantly white society, that was very impactful to her. Maybe if someone of your particular heritage was being heralded, it wouldn’t carry much effect for you, but maybe for another young Asian kid it would. And the fact is that there’s not really much detriment to it, it just seems like people are annoyed by it, but no substantial harm is done. I’m sure someone out there has concocted some sort of pseudo-intellectual reason why for it’s bad other than white people just view life as a zero-sum game and equality will have to be pried from their cold, dead hands, but I don’t think there’s any real legitimate drawback.

I guess the one other thought I have is that one of the main objections to all this that I hear is the meritocratic argument, “why don’t we just give the job to the most qualified candidate?”, which is fine on it’s face, but I can’t help but feel like there’s a strong unspoken second half to that of “…. and that candidate will almost certainly be white, because white people are the best at everything, OBVIOUSLY.”

I haven’t seen Coco or Encanto but I’m pleased that movies like that are being produced. As far as re-imaginings…. I mean, usually no one thinks anything is as good as the original. Did they do away with the dwarves too? Like I said, humans are in a process of evolving. Throughout our lives, things that are regarded as ok will change, and vice versa, and we shouldn’t be sticks in the mud about it every time. My dad is almost 92 years old…. he says things all the time where I’m like “holy shit, man, this isn’t the 1930s, you can’t say things like that anymore, and frankly you shouldn’t even be thinking it in the first place.” At one time, he was a younger, with-the-times guy and that’s just how people rolled. With the benefit of hindsight, we know a lot of that isn’t cool. The “way I’ve always rolled” is changing, things I once said that were new euphemisms at the time are now not the best choice of words. I can adapt, or I can be the old guy that younger people look at as an ignorant douchebag. I’d prefer to grow as I live and be the former.

Personally my family (Wife, myself, and two teenage kids) have written off pretty much anything new from Disney. The Mandelorian was great as was Obi Won, but all the Marvel stuff stinks now and none of the live action remakes have been good.

Disney is highly diversified. They own a heck of a lot that's not called Disney. Most people wouldn't even know Disney owns it. A quick glance and they don't look to be in bad shape at all.

Well they are carrying a lot of losses due to a pretty F’ed up movie house. People are mad and that is impacting the overall brand. Ten years ago people used the logic that a bad movie or two would’t hurt the movie side of the business, well that’s changed.

So Disney isn’t in bad shape… okay. But F Disney, F their brand, and when this seeps into their other areas then you can still say they have other holdings that make it okay… its not okay, its the destruction of shareholder value by asses that think it doesn’t matter.

Here is a statement from Disney’s latest 10-K SEC Filing which is their annual report without the pretty pictures in case you didn’t know. They have to disclose risks to the company or get sued by shareholders. So… they know they are F’ing up.

The 10-K stated, "We face risks relating to misalignment with public and consumer tastes and preferences for entertainment, travel and consumer products, which impact demand for our entertainment offerings and products and the profitability of any of our businesses."

"Further, consumers’ perceptions of our position on matters of public interest, including our efforts to achieve certain of our environmental and social goals, often differ widely and present risks to our reputation and brands," Disney wrote.

Disney further added that "the success of our businesses depends on our ability to consistently create compelling content" and "our revenues and profitability are adversely impacted when our entertainment offerings and products, as well as our methods to make our offerings and products available to consumers, do not achieve sufficient consumer acceptance."

I already read the 10K before I answered the question. I also read what analysts were saying.

At a glance, there is nothing in the 10K to indicate they are in any kind of trouble. The wording you quoted is pretty typical of those filings. They are required by law to put that stuff in there. I don't think I have ever read one of those reports that does not have wording like that. ALL companies have risks. As part of full disclosure, they discuss those risks. It's completely normal.

Disney is too big and diversified to get badly hurt by some of those controversies. They have been controversial since the beginning. I remember hearing about controversies when I was a kid. The controversies started long before that. This is nothing new for them. But they have managed to turn the company into a huge empire.

Of course they don't want losses. I'm just saying it won't seriously affect them and put them in any danger. The truth is that most people don't give a shit about this stuff. They keep on going to Disneyland, because it's fun. They watch the Disney Channel because they like it. They watch Hulu because it's convenient, and they probably don't even know that Disney owns it. Same with A&E, History Channel, ESPN, etc.

You didn't ask if it will have any affect on them. You asked if it will destroy their brand. The answer is no. They have a tremendously valuable brand, one of the biggest and most valuable brands in the world. It will continue being valuable.

But it has negatively affected their brand. People hate their movies. Many Star Wars fans hate them. Many MCU fans hate them. Now classic Disney fans hate them. The movies feed the parks and Disney+ content and more importantly fans, meaning customers. The head waters are getting polluted. That will make its way downstream to the parks and other assets. Ten years ago people said well its just one movie. Well now its not, its the movie house side of the business. We will see what’s next. Disney brand when it comes to movies is now a negative which wasn’t so even just five years ago. I think Star Wars VIII was the turning point.

They'll make adjustments as needed. Pixar itself was an adjustment they made many years ago. Yea, Star Wars went down hill. I didn't even watch the last one after walking out of the one before that. I didn't walk out because it was bad though, but because modern movies are so damn loud. My ears were literally in pain. I have not been to a movie since then.

If upper management is doing a bad job, they'll get kicked out. Shareholders and the board won't put up with it. I don't think the brand has been badly damaged. I think they just need to make good movies.

I got tired of Disney awhile ago. I still went out of my way to watch Loki (and a movie here or there), but otherwise I don’t really care about their shows or movies anymore. I dislike the forced diversity, race swapping, forced ideologies, and where they’re obviously trying to fill quotas etc. I’m glad there is more diversity in general but I’d prefer original ideas with well written characters. Almost all of their live actions are bad too lol.

The whole executive leadership would have to change in order for Disney to return to its founding values. That may happen but Disney itself will need to go down much further into financial trouble so what is left at that time may not be worth savings.

The Marvels were a box office bomb. You really have to screw up to make a bad Marvel movie. If we could find a cure for cancer and thaw Walt Disney out and bring him back to life he might be able to turn things around. Walt Disney was the opposite of woke.

Yeah all of that for sure, but I also feel completely abandoning traditional animation the 2D way also sort of took away the charm peak Disney had. The first few 3D movies were overall good, some honorable mentions like Cars and uh…… I think people liked Frozen? I kind of forgot them besides Cars but yeah.

Wish needs about $450 million to breakeven. They had the worst start of the MCU and the reviews have been terrible. MCU makes its money in the first few weeks as they fans want to see it early to avoid spoilers. This is where brand damage comes in now. People are wary of Disney and will look to early reviews to see if its worth their money. And it hasn’t been for a long time.
