Anime isn’t for everyone. Sometimes it’s the unnecessary fan services, while other times not all anime are interesting to watch leading to some dropping it after watching several episodes. I don’t love all anime but there are definitely some I love since not all anime are my cup of tea.
5 moBy default I don't hate/dislike or love/like it. There are so many anime out there that it's hard to categorize them all.
A positive for anime is that it takes itself a lot more seriously than Western cartoons. Western cartoons are usually known as either for children or if they're for adults just crude edgy animation that looks kind of ugly. In Western cartoons it's usually rare to find a complex deep story for adults that isn't just ugly crude animation and a bunch of swearing.
However, a negative... this isn't unique to anime but sexualization. Towards female characters whatever, Western cartoons do it too. But towards female child characters is where it becomes much more of a problem. I'm sure Western cartoons must've done it at some point but not nearly as much as anime. It's even done often enough to be its own trope. The "loli trope" or whatever it's usually referred to.
I've also heard (but don't quote me on this I'm not 100% sure) that a lot of writers for manga/anime/Japanese media in general are genuinely creepy men who also admit to being pedophiles but apparently laws in Japan don't take being a pedophile as serious as they would in the Western world... yikes.

@Steak_D_Bone If I'm understanding what you wrote properly in the way that you intended it then I respect half of what you wrote but not the other half.
The part about how bad Japan is when it comes to pedophilic stuff such as panties out of the vending machines, kid porn magazines near the toilet, etc... gross but very educational about what a culture is truly like.
But then the part about your girlfriends being 13 or so in age when you were 20 something... 🤢 And another confusing part your profile age says "21?" I'm assuming that's a false age then. Even so 20 something is still WAAAAAAYYY too old to be having a 13 or so girlfriend. If any of my peers did this they'd be in some seriously deep shit.
Then the part about it being super gross to Westerners, but then they try it and change their mind, don't knock until you try it...
If I'm understanding this right: ARE YOU SERIOUSLY TRYING TO NORMALIZE PEDOPHILIA? If that's the case then WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?
Please don't tell me you're also one of those people who buy into the whole MAP bullshit too, MAP standing for Minor Attracted Person. Trying to make up a euphemism for pedophilia as if it's just another part of the LGBTQ+ community...

5 moI've been watching anime since I was a boy. A lot of the plot concepts are mature, based on war, romance, psychological, gory, and honestly there are some animes that helped form my views from an early age.
I was never the type to talk about it. Back when I was in high school, it was looked down upon like some nerdy, waste of time interest/hobby, and only for losers. I would only engage in conversations about it if it was brought up in private, and not a group of people.
Even though anime has gained a lot of popularity and lost a lot of its stigma over the years, it's still looked down upon by many, as is apparent in the comments here. The older generation especially, can't even fathom it. Women still look down on it as a loser interest.
People like that are sheep who can't open their minds to it and give it an honest chance. Some anime is more mature and has better plot concepts than most real shows and movies nowadays.
And so you like watching a bunch of dudes run around throwing balls around fields or courts and follow all the stats for that even though there's no benefit to your life by watching, other than talking to others about it, but you think watching anime for entertainment is a waste of time? Everyone has their hobbies and interests that they should be allowed to indulge in, as long as they're not to the point of detriment.20 Reply
5 moWhat's fun about anime is the variety you get. With most western cartoons you have comedy and that's about it. But with anime you get epic high fantasy plots, drama, romance, slice of life stories. It's just fun.
Anime can also get tired real fast. Like the fan service can get awful, like I'm not a prude or anything, but the anime boobs go insane. It also makes me incredibly unconformable how they will sexualize under age girls. Like yes they are lines on paper, but its still creppy af.
Then so many of the women characters are just to generic. They are written to be props for the guy characters.

5 moThere have been interesting animes. I'm not into the samurai, all the time fighting, trash talking animes that are low on plot. I loved this old anime called "Hellgirl." Haven't watched much lately. Also, the style of animation doesn't excite me. Loved "Samurai Jack": a quest story meant for U. S. audiences... Also really loved "Death Note," though the film was disappointing. I like interesting ideas. "Howl's Moving Castle".. and "Spirited Away."
Other than those few, anime hasn't captured my imagination or attention as much as Pixar's and similar offerings.

Anime can certainly be a mixed bag for many people. Some find the fan service excessive or distracting, which can detract from the plot or character development. The pacing can vary greatly, and not every series holds a viewer's interest or aligns with their taste. However, the incredible diversity within anime means there's likely something for everyone, even if not all series resonate with every viewer. 😄

5 moWell... I don't. Can I still answer the question, just for my side?
First of all, positive anime female characters do not hate men for the fact of existing. Living in the Western sphere of cultural influence, I am tired and honestly on the verge of snapping from all this vitriolic hatred towards men. Safe to say there are people far more angry than even me, so at this point I believe anime is what keeps the numbers of E. R. cultists low.
Second of all, anime is for everyone. You can find series aimed at actual kids (yeah, they tend to be watched by the weird crowd, as well, but that's not the anime series' fault), stuff for teenagers of both sexes that will help then grow to be respectable human beings, as well as adult anime dealing with actually dark and serious topics. Oh, and yeah, there's this other "adult anime", too. Personally, this is one of two genres I don't watch (the other being the anime aimed at literal kids). If You judge all anime through the lens of this rather special "adult anime", You are simply r******d.
Third, some anime is actually designed to help people (of all ages and both sexes) cope with their suffering and traumas. It's just a wholesome way the Japanese found to keep their fellow society members at least somewhat happy. There is no such thing in the West, and definitely not for men. If anything, men are being villainized for simply existing in the West. The only exceptions I know are VTubers (well, duh, that's just anime with extra steps... and features), the members of the manosphere on the internet (that's literally organized male self-defense), and women like Shoe0nHead and Christine Grace Smith (there are even a few here on GaG, I guess).
So... Yeah... Especially as a man, I have a lot of reasons to like anime. Being fascinated by the Japanese culture in general (like the code of the samurai, quite like the European knights, but unlike the European knights, the tradition is still very much alive - the suicide being not just tolerated, but expected in some cases is a problem, though) does help, too.

5 moI haven’t watched a lot of new things that I like. I enjoy anime, but usually when it’s shonen with a very obvious appeal to a specific male audience where the female cast kinda gets treated like posterboards rather than people, I can’t watch it because I just hate to see the obviously misogynistic writing. So something like Demon Slayer, Boruto, Re:Zero, I can’t enjoy that. There’s also just individual animes I don’t like even with good writing like Attack On Titan but it’s just so violently gorey I can’t get into it. But there are some others that are usually okay, but if it’s written by a man it’s not easy for me to enjoy it because Japanese culture is pretty notoriously sexist.
10 Reply366 opinions shared on Entertainment & Arts topic. I don't hate it, but it's not for me. I gave it a shot two years ago since I was really into Asian stuff including japanese dramas, but i didn't really end up liking it. to me it's a bit too over the top, the girls's voices are often too high pitched, everything felt either a bit juvenile or on the contrary a bit too male gazey for me and i got annoyed with the animation quickly enough. i don't think animated stuff is really for me (unless it's very beautiful) i prefer real people in shows.

5 moI like anime but my interest has been waning the last few years.. People who don't like it are usually boring up tight people who think they are too 'mature' for it when really they are some of the most mid people you will ever come across in terms of personality and lifestyle.

@PeachyPie93 well you are getting older. As am I
I don't dislike anime, and there are even a couple that I find mildly interesting.
What I don't get is the people, usually grown men & women, that go absolutely bonkers over the stuff. It's a cartoon, and yet they treat it like the second coming of Christ, or something. It's like some weird cult obsession, and I will never understand it.
20 Reply4.9K opinions shared on Entertainment & Arts topic. Why would I want to watch cartoons, let alone ones that are devoid of entertainment value? It doesn't help that they oversexualize children so much. The poor writing and childish acting make me cringe even if I watch it just for a few minutes.
Furthermore, I never met a big anime fan who was remotely mentally stable.

5 moThere are so many strange and gross images in anime, the beautiful cartoon females make me feel ugly, though they are not real women, the genre is too unrealistic, the plot is too monotone, the emotions are too exaggerated, and I am a fast reader who can cover a whole comic book in 1 hour, so it seems like a waste of money to spend $30 on a book.
10 Reply 446 opinions shared on Entertainment & Arts topic. Some anime shows are entertaining but 90% is just usual slob that aims primarily sell of some, games, books or plastic toys. Sometimes it's just usual Netflix BS completely soaked with political agenda.
The art of watching anime is to pick out those 10% that are watchable.10 Reply
5 moI liked anime growing up.
As an adult : talk about those female pirates on that show, crikey what writers and drawers are they in Japan anymore lol "I'm pretty sure all these pirates are 20s caucasian women who all seem slim fit and well umm well-gifted physically" - 👀 visually.
And that is one peace ✌️ 🕊️ to world peace - see what I did there 👀 😋

5 moI watch a few but generally there's too much crying, some tend to they drag the story too long, I'm picky about animation style, too many robots, too many monsters, too many fight scenes that are unthoughtful, the fans are weird... That's less of a problem now than it used to be.
But there are a bunch of good ones. I just don't go looking for them.
00 Reply Anime is just another form of entertainment. It has it's own joke type, sexualization focus, troupes, etc. just like all other forms of entertainment. You could say, it's own culture. And like with all forms of entertainment (and culture), you will see the same recurring problems: repetitive, low effort, only a few good ones hidden among what feels like endless choices, and so on.

5 moI prefer cel shaded anime from the 60s to especially up to the late 90s before when anime studios replaced cel shade with digital and I never liked that, modern anime fans and "artists" complain about how "soulless" AI generated anime and art are yet completely ignore how sub par digitalized anime is compared to cel shaded anime like sailor moon and Yu Yu Hakusho and the anime rama films
