Why does my guy friend care so much?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that he cares so much, but it's a little strange. I've been helping him, by looking over some papers and stuff like that and I know he is really grateful, but in the last couple days he told me he doesn't want to lose me as a friend because of me helping him out. He keeps telling me that he keeps telling people how much I have helped him and that no one has supported him as much as I have. When we were working today, he kept asking if I was okay and wanted to make sure that I wasn't angry at him. It's nice that he is appreciative, but I don't really get why he is afraid that he is going to lose me. He never said that before, I didn't realize he valued our friendship that much.

Maybe he's lost a lot of people and his life and you're so special to him that he doesn't want to lose you. Sounds like you treat him well and he highly appreciates that and he's just afraid of losing you. He's scared, maybe.
