If an hispanic/latino is fully westernized (didn't retain any of their roots), are the parents at fault?

I'm Mexican-American (non-white) that can't even make a single soup, nor beans nor anything from Mexico. I can't even speak Spanish correctly without an accent.
My parents were already on their 5th year of speaking English by the time they had me. They didn't focus too much on teaching me their culture nor native language. They took too long in teaching me Spanish; I was already 13 years old by then.

A couple relatives in the family were disappointed and someone once referred me as a coconut; told me I had no hispanic heritage within me, none.

They aren't at fault on why you don't speak Spanish and all that but it's not something someone is forced to do because you can still learn things, it's never too late to learn, it would be messed up to blame your parents for it, if they are at fault for something is not keeping it in the family so you can grow with these roots but it doesn't change anything, you are part Mexican, nothing will change it, you were just Americanized if you live in the states, it's what they call it here by some lol

You are an American and you are supposed to be an American. Heritage is nice but all emigrants lose it sooner or later. Usually that happens in the second generation born in the US but if often happens to first generation Americans. Not the end of the world unless you want to return to Mexico to live.

I find Spanish a cool, romantic language. I wish I could improve my accent and be more fluent at it. When I try speaking longer sentences or harder words, I have to speak it a bit slower.

Yes, knowing a foreign language is nice, and particularly andy in the US if it is Spanish. I have been working on German but have not progressed very far. My girlfriend is from China but Mandarin is a horribly difficult language!

Nobody is at "fault" because there is nothing wrong with being integrated into the society you were born into.

It’s normal due to racism and the fact that most families assimilate into western culture after a generation or two. The same thing happens to Asians but it could be due to how much hatred the USA has for Mexicans that many of them are ashamed of their culture and language so they partake into western culture to fit in.

yes they did
1st generation are those born outside the US (my parents), 2nd generation are those born in the US but with latino parents (myself) and 3rd generation would be my future children

Do people do other second-generation know Spanish?

If the parents teach them Spanish then yes they would know Spanish. Several 2nd generation hispanics know Spanish and others don't.
