Yeah sheltering kids from reality creates stupid adults. Give them science books and videos as toddlers, teach them everything very early. Let them swear, censor nothing.
Drinking alcohol is something adults shouldn't do either so thats moot, and forbidding going out alone as a child isn't sheltering, it's being smart, but not being allowed to attend events period is stupid unless its dangerous.
That said, even as an informed adult, I'm not going to a concert or other large chaotic gatherings, and socially speaking I'd still find it very uncomfortable and irritating.

Our one job as parents other than provide the necessities is to equip them with the right tools like wisdom and values to navigate the world and handle it's challenges. Obviously your formal in-laws did your ex-S-L no favors by shielding her from the world instead of preparing her to live in it.
Which begs a question, how did you end up falling for their son?
I can't imagine he was any better prepared than his sister.
Parents should do all they can to help their children grow up as fast as is humanly possible, because the world wasn't made for weak, ineffective, incompetent, clueless people, and I know how stifling it is to have an over-protective parent who treats you like a two-year old until her dying day!

Sounds like your ex-sister-in-law should probably start by going to the movies before she goes to rock concerts.
They don’t have to take them out of private schools but they can shelter them from the bad guys of the world
I think in extreme cases it can do more harm than good. The world is a cruel place and a normal childhood helps to thicken up a persons skin.
Those sheltered kids may be safer growing up but I think it leaves them dangerously unprepared for the real world which isn't always nice
Home schooling is a bad idea. Kids need to socialize with their peers, however unpleasant that might be.
I think humans must be made aware of chaos when they are ready for it. Filthy stuff exists. If we can talk about it we can reject it and live a healthy life.
Yeah I bet the kids are not Mormons anymore, I'm not a strict Catholic, but I'm still a Catholic.
Gotta love those crazy religious nut job mormons, right?
The result of that story speaks for itself!
They should shelter to some extent
Exactly.
Not to that extent.
