live with my mom. My mom knows an independent contractor. Ill call him ed. He's done a lot of work on our house. Well, his son just passed away from a massive heart attack at 27 years old. I hungout down stairs with him in case he needed some help. I dont know him very well at all. Just talked to him a couple of times. Well, while I'm standing there he starts talking about his son, and how his daughter and ex wife are blaming him for his sons death. Ed drinks and they are saying that because Ed drinks that his son was drinking, and that's what killed him. His sister is having a memorial at an open bar, and that Ed isn't invited. Ed said its inappropriate to have his memorial at an open bar when his daughter says that his son died from alchole. At least I thunk that's what he was saying. I thought it sounded inappropriate too. I told him I'd be upset if they didn't invite me to my own sons memorial. Ed apologized for venting to me. I said it's okay. I felt kind of uncomfortable because he teared up a little bit, which I think is understandable because he just lost his son. I just thunk he desperately needed someone to talk to so he started talking to me. I guess if I was the wrong person then I might be turned off by him talking about his personal life with me, and wouldn't hire him again, but I don't feel that way. When he was leaving he shook my hand and thanked me for listening. So do you think it was inappropriate for him to talk about that with me?

It sounds like you handled it really well. He had a Huge Loss and his family is blaming him for his son's death. You were probably the only one he had to talk to. I honestly think it's sick that the family is having his son's memorial at an open bar considering the fact alcohol is what killed him.
But yes, it was unprofessional that he was talking about his personal life when he was hired to do a job in your house. Considering the circumstances, I wouldn't hold it against him.
No one knows yet what he died from. They have yet to do an autopsy.
He had just experienced a huge loss and was upset. I wonder if his son got the covid vaccine?
