When does the feeling of being an adult hit?

I'm 20 and I still feel like a kid. I live with my parents (they don't want me to move out yet), have yet to buy my car off of them (I wanted to buy my first car off of them), and still have a curfew/have to ask them permission to go places.

I feel stuck in place, like things aren't going to change. My future seems more like a dream than something that's going to happen. How do I approach trying to be more adult? Trying to find independence when my mom doesn't want me moving out or even having said car I want to buy off them?

You sort of gradually grow into it as you take on more and more responsibilities.


First, taking care of all your own bills, then learning how to live on your own and everything associated with that (insurance, rent, fees, utilities, bills, logistics, budgeting, taxes, etc.).


The more independent you become and the more responsible and mature (emotionally mature) you become, the more you’ll feel like an adult and before you know it, you won’t question it anymore.


You’ll feel like an adult when you’re emotionally, mentally, and financially are ready to start your own family.

you need to start with getting your own job, earning your own money then save up a deposit so you can get a house/apartment to yourself.

For me, I was 16. I got my first job and moved into an apartment, so all of a sudden I had rent to pay. That was a big wake-up call.
