Why won’t my mom let me go anywhere unless it’s with her?

My dad is fine with it but my mom isn’t. I’m literally trapped in my room 90% of the time until she decides she wants to go out and I can come with her.. I feel trapped.

I told her I’m interested in getting a job and she said no.
I told her that I HAVE to go outside and do community service (need hours to graduate, I already have the minimum amt but I’d like to get more for more scholarship opportunities ) and she said no.

She won’t even let me go take a walk around my GATED neighborhood by myself. It’s not even like I’m a little baby. I turn 18 in a month. WTF. I can’t wait to get the hell out of this house..

American helicopter parenting. The worst. :-(

I remember talking on the phone with an American colleague and she told me how her evening was blocked because she had to supervise her son and his friend's playing. I assumed they were very young children, maybe three or four and she told me they were twelve. I was too stunned for words. When I was twelve, me and my friends took the bus or the bike to go into the next bigger city to visit the movie theater etc. etc. Nobody supervised our playing any longer after we entered primary school.

She is concerned about your safety but I think she's taking it way too far. It's not like you're 10 years old. Not being able to take a walk around your gated community is a bit much honestly. Maybe show her this opinion 🤔 I too would be very frustrated with being treated like I'm a little kid. Good luck 👍
