Why do a lot of people feel the need to comment on everything that a person does?

I just got rid of a 13 year friendship. I’ve known my male friend for years and in ways he has been a good friend. He’s done some things that have bothered me but today was too far.

I am training for a Marathon to raise money for charity in memory of loved one, never been a great runner, and I mainly lift weights. I’m very slow but im determined to improve etc. I posted a photo saying the longest run I’ve done and how it’s a start and I was chuffed for pushing myself. He messaged me saying it was a “brisk walk” and not a run. Now I just donated blood the day before so I was feeling tired already but I still did it. I was upset by this and he said “your playing victim, your making me sound like a d*ck”. I wouldn’t tolerate it this time and refuse to apologise, I’m going to be upset because a goal that means a lot to my family and I. So now we aren’t friends anymore. What would you do in this situation? And why do people have to say their “opinion” on everything? Why do people feel the need to comment on things that are none of their business? It seems pointless to me, like what do they think they are going to achieve by behaving like that?
