Why are guys getting suddenly quiet around me? I think their friend likes me?

This guy at the gym and I have stared at each other, locking eyes a lot. It happened for a few months. Then suddenly stopped. He would walk by the machines I used. We walked by each other, heading opposite ways, and he had a coughing fit and got red once. He would walk towards me, we caught eyes, and then I'd get shy and look away. He would turn and head to a machine. But then it weirdly stopped. Now his friends are being weird. His group of friends now get awkwardly quiet whenever I'm near. Like everyone take a quick look and hush hush whisper. It's annoying me and creeping me out. What does this mean? He and I don't look at each other or talk...

Maybe. He won't look me in the face and has a serious face. I wish it would stop though.

This is the most genuine question I would like to ask, in regards ot your situation; how come so many guys do this whole staring thing, without talking?

When I try to tell someone my experiences with it, I feel SO silly, because it's like... it sounds so silly. This guy just stares, but he doesn't talk to me. Why would a guy invest so much time in being lame, and not talking to someone?

I don't know why they stare. It's not like I wear anything provocative to the gym nor fit. I've never talked to them before nor do I know who they are.
