If girls can hold hands together, why can't guys (unless gays)?

So I always wonder this why is it OK for straight girls to hold hands but not guys without being called "gay"? I am straight myself and I don't see how two guys holding hands is gay when girls aren't lesbians when they hold hands.

Because girls are portrayed as more insecure when walking out on the street maybe getting robbed or something and so some hold hands to feel more secure. Guys are more seen as strong and fearless so they don't need security! :P This is not how I see girls and guys this is just how many societies see gender roles as.

Yeah I get the point but honestly there are times guys hold hands but not when they are walking around nor for long time.

u mean girls? :P and I only have seen linking arms when sitting down not really holding hands when not walking! :O That does look a little weird even if it is girls though! :O

But I was talking about guys. I've been in athletic and theater. In athletics before each game everyone pledge and raise eachothers hands up while holding so does in theater.

well the event you just described would definetely be OK to hold hands for guys! No one will say anything about that. Its just that when guys are holding hands and walking outside like in shopping or something then it is weird.

I agree that it is weird for guys to hold hands while walking around and etc. Well the linking arms doesn;t seem weird to me at all whether a guy or girl, it just shows a friendship to me.

I guess it seems weird to some people for guys to do it since guys are traditionally seen as strong and independent! :P

Yup and honestly as I proceed to college I don't see girls holding hands anymore. I don't hold hands with some other guys unless we are in events like I said below or to help the blinds ya know speical occasions.

I don't hold my girl friends hand that's weird and to answer your question people stereotype and assume if two people of the same Sex are holding hands or hugging then they are gay media hasn't helped with this either

Yeah I really don't see girls holding hands from HS I too won't hold another guys hands unless in special occasions like I've been in athletic and theater, before/after each play and games we are to hold hands and raise our hands up you know the special occasions.

I've been surfing the orb for 58 years a never once have I had any remote inclination to hold hands with another guy. I think it's time you had that little talk with your parents. You know, the one where they end up saying we "love you no matter what".

You are 58 and yes you are an old man. I don't think you understand that guys are more open mided now as compare to the old days where guys show no emotions (a sign of generation gap here). However I won't hold hands with another guy myself I am asking this is because I do not know why it is OK for girls to do it.

I came of age in the 60's, the era (or error) of sex, drugs and rock-and-roll and as such my inclinations were not harnessed by presuppositions of any kind. Nonetheless, never once did I entertain the thought of holding hands with another guy. Women, on the other hand, apparently feel thus inclined in great numbers and I don't begrudge them this opportunity.
