Take a plate and tray, plop it on the counter, and shuffle along the queue, sliding it as you go. As you pass each square tub, you poke your plate through for a dollop of potato, cabbage, or whatever until you reach the end, then pay up before wandering around trying to find an empty table before your food gets cold.
It is, of course, the canteen or cafeteria if you're American. In the UK, they're often found in department stores and carveries. I've not been to one in ages and always associated them with old people who go there for a day out.
Once again, I find myself descending from my lofty plane to grace Girls Ask Guys with my divine wisdom. Today’s question tickled my fancy: “How do you feel about canteens/cafeterias?” Ah, such mundane concerns! Yet, fret not, for I shall bestow upon you an earth-shattering concept.
In MY realm, the concept of canteens and cafeterias boils down to one thing: CONTROL.
Picture this, my pet: rows of slaves lined up like the animals they are, waiting obediently for their portion—controlled feeding designed to reinforce hierarchy and dependence. Envision metal bowls filled with gruel, handed out according to merits earned during arduous training sessions. The Bondage Bruce Cafeteria (BBC) therefore serves the following purposes:
Feeding Time: Instead of having separate trays, I can bind two slaves together and feed them simultaneously. Adding nipple clamps linked by chain as an extra incentive to cooperate.
Restricted Access: Forced discipline and delay gratification. I have locks on refrigerators or pantry doors, requiring permission before accessing essential nutrients. Slaves must beg for every meal, reminding them of their place and fueling their desire for your approval.
Performance Art: The cafeteria is a place to entertain me. Slaves are subjected to unique challenges, like eating blindfolded or wearing restrictive garments. Turn simple tasks into tests of endurance and devotion.
Public Display: Ill-behaved slaves publicly perform chores or exercises in the cafeteria as a form of entertainment. This exhibitionist approach reminds everyone present that even basic needs are subject to your caprices.
Consequences: Misbehave during mealtime, and suffer appropriate punishments. There's nothing more frightening than when I smack a tray of food out of your hands and the sound of glass and silverware echos through the building.

They tend to be expensive - mainly because it's so easy to keep adding things to your plate. I've been to a cafeteria maybe 5 times in the last 40+ years.
I much prefer buffets where you can eat as much as you want for a single price. I mostly just eat the salad bar at buffets since almost no place else has them any more. But I throw in an entree and desert because I already paid for it.
I ate at a restaurant like that during my trip to Iguazu water fall 3 months ago. The food was good but the disadvantage is, you might not make a correct calculation of how much your food will cost and end up overpaying for your meal. Its not a popular way to price food cause where I live in Canada a pound of lettuce costs more money than a pound of chicken so if they are priced the same, nobody will touch the chicken.
Hygiene standards at self service buffets are often a problem. I avoid them if I can. With people who serve the dishes it's not different than fast food chains. It's not that I can't afford eating at expensive canteen in clinic where I work, but I prefer a home made bun or pasta that I packed at home for lunch.
I'm all about chasing flavors and diving into various culinary cultures, so you might find it surprising that I've got a soft spot for canteens and cafeterias. 20 years ago, all-you-can-eat buffets had their moment, but nearly all of them are long gone - most didn't survive the 2008 recession, and the few that did got killed by COVID policies. I'm not sure there are any within 200 miles of me, and given the population density of Northern California, that's saying something.
I guess. I was thinking more along the lines of Golden Corral - i. e., American food buffets. There used to be several of those chains, plus a few independents. Few are left standing.
Canteens and cafetarias are just functional and useful places. When I was younger I often visited them, not because of the non existant charm of those places, but because they offered an easy way to have a plain and cheap dinner without having to bother much more about food during a working day.
Iremember my college cafeteria. The food was actually pretty good freshman year. Then they changed food companies and the food really sucked. Thry always had hamburgers so if you did not like what was on the menu you could always have a hamburger.
I like the ability to choose what I want, from a good choice of foods and drinks. A group of us from work used to frequent a local cafeteria... until it closed during the pandemic.
There was one on Mumbles pier I used to go to every summer as a kid. Took my wife there just after our son was born but it's not quite the same as it was
They are fast and convenient and usually cheaper then sit down service for me it’s okay if in in a hurry but honestly it reminds me of my time in the military too much.
Oh, man. I used to love Whites Cafeteria in Longview. The dining room was huge with several sections and the food was freaking delicious. I used to go every Saturday back when I was in my early 30s. I miss that place.
