What does it mean when a guy constantly picks on a girl?

There is this guy who is always insulting to me. Mostly it's calling me annoying names or cracking jokes at my expense. He always tries to start a immature fight with me or insults little things I do. Yet he will defend his actions by telling me he is not serious in what he says and only does it to "get a rise out of me". A lot of my friends have started to notice his behavior and have described it as an "old married couple" or "a 5 year old pulling the pigtails of a girl". I just want to know whether it's cause of something else or if he really is just an asshole.

Seems to me that he is trying to get your undivided attention. Sounds as if he does like you, but

is going a bit overboard with the "teasing to get your attention" tactics. Do you tease him back?

Do you get upset when he does this? Play the game with him... if you're interested in him...

it may lead to more, if more is what you want.

He sometimes goes overboard with the picking on me or "teasing" but then he goes out of his way to remind me "oh I'm not serious, I'm just joking around". And I do sorta fight back, mostly cause he can get really annoying sometimes. Though he used to do the "playful teasing" when I first got to know him and now it's degraded to picking on me to just pick on me.

Is it hurtful teasing, does he do it to purposely make you feel "bad"or"angry"?Or do you think he does it just to see how riled up he can get you like you said "to get a rise out of you"? If it's not done in a mean spirited way (to get you angry or to make you feel bad, I think he's doing it purely for your attention).Have you tried to ignore him?What does he do? If not give that a try and see what he does? What if he got you so upset you cried,what do you think he'd do then? Food for thought !
