Are cocky guys insecure?

I have a friend, and he happens to also be my crush, who is really really cocky, to the point where I don't even wanna be around him as much anymore, even though I have feelings for him. He's never had a girlfriend and I would say he fits more into the nerd category of high school labels. My best friend thinks he does that because he's actually insecure about himself, is this true? I mean, he is good looking and I know plenty girls who agree but his good looks only hit him recently.

He very well could be. Sometimes people will try to hide the fact that they have certain insecurities by putting on an act, in hopes that they and everyone else will believe it.

I know at one point I went through this cocky stage on my way to becoming less shy. I had gotten to a point where I wasn't so shy and I had seen a little progress in myself. Out of desperation and excitement, I tried to ax down any shyness and timidity I had left by over-acting. I found that it didn't get rid of anything any faster, and it was actually a chore to keep up with this act.

So yeah, it could be a way to hide an insecurity, the guy is fed up with being a pushover and goes to the other extreme, or he is genuinely cocky.

i have to admit I can be pretty cocky but most of the time its not arrogant. there's a fine line between cockiness and arrogance. most of the time I don't cross this line but its happened before. plus girls kind of like guys who are a little cocky and funny but not assholes.

and as for why I do that? honestly its just more fun. I'm pretty confident with myself so its not like I'm insecure.

Guys do it for fun? Cause my friend does it, like, if I compliment him and say something like "you look good today" or "nice hair" his reply would be "I know I do" or "Oh I know" stuff like that.

If guys do it for fun, I don't think girls are ganna like that either.

see that's more arrogant than cocky. I'm talking about like making fun of a girl in a subtle way that makes her laugh. like:

"wow that is SUCH a cute necklace! did you get it at a thrift store?!?!"

Overcompensation, is the term here... and yes, your friend has that BAD... He's just getting rid of a few inhibitions, etc.
