Girls, How can I tell if someone likes me?

Based on advice from various women, to them it should be obvious to a guy. I guess the part I don't understand is that a lot of women are initially rude to me. As in they actively ignore me, or even look pissed off I look in their general direction.
Also, when I ask someone to dance that I think I might have a chance with, they act irritated, even though they say yes, or they act like they couldn't care less, but they smile a lot while we're dancing.
I just don't understand. I don't feel like I'm as ugly as I'm treated. I work out regularly, and I try to be kind and positive. I don't know why no one seems to like me.
