A few months ago, I joined this new team where I introduced myself to everyone in voice call. This girl (Let's call her "Sara") was chatting casually with me like everyone else.
Later that day, we met up to eat dinner. Weirdly enough, the first time we met each other, Sara was really quiet around me. I could feel the tension. It didn't feel the same when we were having that voice call. I tried to chat with the group as a whole to try and ease the tension, but nothing worked. She wouldn't look me in the eye either.
As the months go by, I was already comfortable with the rest of the group, but Sara was still really quiet and would only talk to me when it's about important stuff. I observed her interaction with others and could tell that she was comfortable interacting with them. I felt that I had to try a different approach with her to remove that barrier with her. I tried to be quieter, it didn't work. I tried to be more initiative, it didn't work either.
But, our group had a funny joke about me where we all laughed together, and this inside joke was the only other thing she could use to communicate with me with, whenever she felt like she could use it. I was happy about that because it helped to ease the tension, but that's really about it.
