Girls, What does it mean when a group of women looks at a man and talk among themselves?

For context. I spent last Saturday on a 20 km hike. As I reached my destination, a seaside resort, I walked past a number of restaurants. A group of women, mid-twenties to early thirties, was sitting near the window in one of the restaurants. I noticed them while they were staring at me and then they glanced at each other and started talking among themselves. They were kind of giggling or laughing, but not quite. When I looked back a few seconds later, I saw them staring again. I am not that great at interpreting body language, so I was wondering: could you shed some light on this? I am curious: what could have gone through their minds?

Some simple minded girls have nothing better to do than to put others in an awkward situation or to make them feel uncomfortable by gossiping about that person while looking at him/her intensely.

Don't read too much about it nor should you overthink it. There is nothing that should wake up false hopes that you may be an Adonis or that they would like to do things with you.

This happens due to boredom and for no apparent reason. Some girls are simply like that when in a group. Taken individually, those girls would be way too shy to even say "hi" to you.

What happens is the confidence of the group and the knowledge that the others will support you when you mock or make fun of others. They would never dream of doing all of that by themselves. If you would go back and pass by each girl individually, they would not even look at you by fear of giving the wrong impression.

Group pressure is what it is all about. Nothing to worry. You are safe and should not give it too much thought.

Ah, the mind reading request. No clue what they were on about. They could have been gossiping about you or the person behind you. It could be all in your head that it was about you and not someone else. I presume you were not the only person out and about.

As to why they did that? I haven't a clue. My friends and I do not stare, giggle or comment about people as they pass by. Perhaps they are just childish and immature girls with nothing better to do than to poke fun at people.

They may have been doing it to everyone that walked by because they had nothing better to talk about or do. In the end, it doesn't really matter, does it? It isn't like you are likely to see them again in the same setting. I would not worry about it too much and probably chalk that one up to some immature girls with too much people watching time on their hands.
