Is describing someone as 'flat chested' an insult?

I was out with my girlfriend and a few other couples last night for drinks.

When we arrived one of my girlfriend's female friends complimented her on her dress saying 'i'm so jealous, flat chested women can get away with so many cute styles'!

My girlfriend took this well at the time but when we got home she was tearful. Saying how she wanted a boob job and she feels humiliated by her chest.

I didn't think the comment was that deep and it seemed meant as a compliment.

Is describing someone as flat chested always an insult for women? I don't know how to cheer her up :(

What was said was more complimentary than anything but pointing out she has small boobs wasn't tactful.

I think you will have your work cut out reassuring her to be honest. But keep telling her you like her boob size and ask her to dress to show them off. She will probably respond with something like you might but I don't. So keep it more constant assurance.

I'm not flat chested myself. So I cannot say about the word in itself.

But I believe it's more about her having an insecurity perhaps, and then it gets pointed out like that in front of others.

I would say that you could always talk with her about it. Let her vent of she needs to. And then make sure she knows that you appreciate her body for what it already is. - Which I hope is the truth.

Of course, I get that. People really think it's okay to comment on someone's body unprompted, and it's not. And it can be very crushing, especially if it happens all the time.
And it hurts a lot if it's something you're already insecure about.

Good strategy. People are saying C cups are small now which I don't think they are. I like elfine figures myself. I suppose the poor girl thinks it makes her less feminine not to have huge breasts.

You can't cup huge breasts and I like to be able to cup.

I think emphasize you like her figure but understand she is unhappy with it, so you sort of have to acknowledge that while you say how much you like her as she is.

I think it sounded like a backhanded compliment. It’s not an insult per say but it was an unnecessary thing to point out, it’s similar to saying “oh those boots look really good on you, short man can get away with wearing shoes with some heels on them huh, I’m jealous”.

She knew it was an insult when she said it but she hid it in a compliment so she could plead ignorance if your girlfriend reaacted negatively. That's the kind of catty, passive aggressive thing women do to each other.

Yeah--if she's in shape and has big boobs then she was taking a shot at your girlfriend. Does she have a guy? Maybe she's envious about not being in a relationship herself.
