I am very expressive,

Something that is sweet and nice - can make me feel very happy very easily.

For example, I got very happy about something right now, as I was about to sleep and I jumped out of bed out of happiness! And even got my eyes a little teary out of happiness.

Yesterday, when I had a dinner I was probably the one laughing the loudest in the whole place, not obnoxiously or anything, none of us seem to have cared. We were just having a good fun talking.

We had a great time and then, my friend told me about his childhood and I got my eyes teary and had to try real hard not to get my chin trembling.

I can’t help but express what I feel like. Sometimes I wish I was less expressive, because everything I feel - you can read on my face. I’d make an awful poker player.

I'm the most extreme case in my inner circle with my wife being a close second. I think a part of it in my case is that childhood growing up in a variety of cultures and having to pick up new languages along the way.

I started to rely heavily on reading other people's body language to understand their feelings as well as using my body language to express my own feelings more clearly since I often lacked the familiarity with the spoken language. So I even exaggerated my body language initially, talked excitedly with my hands a lot, with an emphasis on nonverbal communication to try to overcome shortcomings in the verbal communication. At some point that exaggeration became a natural part of me and I now longer feel like I'm exaggerating at all, but my nonverbal language is extremely expressive.

I generally feel so crippled reading and writing like this on the internet since I can't use my body language and tone of voice to better express my feelings or read other people's feelings. I figure it's a good practice for me to learn to communicate without relying at all on nonverbal cues, but I do feel extremely crippled.

I also tend to laugh louder and harder than anyone at parties. If anyone were to just glance around a nightclub when I was younger, I'm easy to spot without even knowing anything else except that I'm the guy who looks like he's having more fun than anyone else there.

I'm actually really good at live Poker though! I've stacked professional grinders repeatedly since I'm such an expressive and straightforward type normally that they never think I'm bluffing when I use reverse tells and check-raise and slowly push my chips all-in at the river with complete air. They assume my tells are reliable which is extremely profitable to me! 😂 Once they start figuring out that I might actually be capable of reverse tells, I switch tables.

A lot of the appeal of this site to me is the ability to practice communicating in English without relying on nonverbal cues. I often use a disclaimer though that the way I communicate on the internet is radically different from how I communicate in person since I rely so heavily on being extremely expressive and reading other people's nonverbal cues.

That's probably the most flattering way possible to put it in my case, although I think I'm just like a goofy kid in an adult body. 😅 I never saw the point of growing out of our inner child in our fun time, only put our grown-up pants on in the serious times. So I tend to draw people who similarly have an inner child they never grew out of but also repel people who grew out of it.

That’s me in a nutshell. I sustained so much damage over such a long time that letting my inner child run the show became the best way to regulate my mood, and I’ve healed enough to care little about what others may think of me because of it. When do grups have any real fun anyway? When they’re drinking, plowing or making small talk? I don’t think so.

@82lynx I always found the deepest conversations my favorite although I enjoy some dancing and Karaoke in the meantime (recently learned to do both without drinking as I've quit alcohol completely). I like to see fun and laughter a transition to the deeper subjects, and also a gateway into a more affectionate way of communication.

I've come to enjoy quieter daytime activities like picnics with my friends. Also even casually playing sports is very fun for me. Also have a lifelong love of amusement parks. It's difficult to find a lot of people my age these days enthusiastic to ride the most thrilling rollercoasters, but I have a lot of kids in my inner social circle now who enjoy those.

Oh I prefer deeper conversations as well. I’m very introverted and never cared much for parties, but I’m always up for some simple fun. I wouldn’t be able to handle rollercoasters; even a short ride with a reckless driver in a 1980 Camaro had me frozen to my seat and ultimately begging to be let out.

@82lynx I might be a bit of a lunatic that way addicted to thrills. I find it the best social icebreaker for people (even better than alcohol as it lacks the dulling of senses) who are down if we're a bit shy or reserved around each other to do something thrilling and get a little surge of adrenaline. Then I find we're often very comfortable around each other after laughing and having a good time. Definitely not for everyone though and I try to respect that even though I'm a bit addicted to thrills and simulated high-risk situations if not actual ones.

A lot of the deepest conversations I can enjoy with the widest variety of people are generally more focused on the subjective. Like instead of someone giving me a concise summary of a book, I'd prefer they share with me how the book made them feel, what they most subjectively and specifically find interesting about it, how it relates to their personal experiences, etc. I think I've developed more interest in the subjective this way over objective mainly because we live in this information age where I can find the analogical concise book report a Google search away on my smartphone. So the really unique and difficult to assess "data", if you will, is the subjective for me now as no individual is a better authority on the subject than that individual.

If I meet someone who has very deep expertise on a subject that fascinates me though, like the case of a historian, then I love to just pick their brains and have them teach me about history. It's rare that I encounter such experts on subjects though in my daily life.

I do get overly excited about things. Never take me to a comedy club! I’m sure the comedians love me but I think I annoy my friends because I laugh so hard, at times I hyperventilate! 😆

I definitely can be when I’m around people I know really well or if I’m by myself. I go crazy dancing and singing when alone if I’m cooking or cleaning.

Something that helped me a bit if you want to change it (although I think guys who are a bit poker-faced and reserved in their expressions can be really cool and appealing to women) is that I started to observe and mimic some of my friends who were most animated and expressive in the way they talked. I found them the most fun to talk to because of how animated they were, so completely opposite of the monotone types who put me to sleep.

It's something I needed to improve upon since I taught CompSci 101 & 102 in uni, just as a TA but the professor only showed up to class a few times the entire semester and left it to me to teach those courses. So CompSci is a pretty dry subject and initially I found I was losing the interest of my students even though I was already a bit expressive, I needed to become even more expressive to hold their interest and keep them excited about learning this relatively boring subject.

So I observed my most animated friends and most exciting public speakers and started to mimic them on a daily basis. After a bit of practice, it stopped becoming mimicry and just started to become something I did naturally without thinking.
