Can a popular confident guy be shy around someone he likes?

So, there is this guy I like a lot in my grade. he is in two of my classes, and we see eachother almost everyday at school (besides trips and his lacross.) He is popular and hangs out with all the grades even though he is in grade nine. I have seen him glancing at me in class then darting his eyes away the second he sees me. In class, he hangs out with his group of friends and our groups dobt really mix so we dont talk that much. He doesn't answer my dms that much, but one time he did and then he answered back at 7am when he forgot to answer back once. He sort of backs out of conversations when I walk in casually. I have been told by my friend that he has stared at me when I wasn't looking and it was for about ten seconds each time. He still follows me on sites and he just followed me on instagram today. When we do talk casually, he doesn't stare right into my eyes like he used to. On Wednesday at the end of class we were waiting for the bell to ring and he looked at me for a while while walking over near me for a second, then he stopped and looked like he was thinking, and started talking to his friend. What couod all this mean?

He also sort of blocks the half of his face I am facing away from me and sort of grooms his hair a bit. Then I only noticed the day he was sick, and maybe he was doing that because he was tired and didn't want people knowing he was sick?
