Why would a guy initiate contact but then not respond?

Sometimes the guy I like will contact me (text or Snapchat usually) first out of the blue, and it could be about something we were discussing earlier or just something random (like him eating lunch or something about his car). I'll respond with something nice or funny, and sometimes he'll respond, and sometimes he won't.

I know he's not just sending out messages to lots of girls since I'm the only girl he snapchats and probably one of the few he texts. One time I snapped him first and he didn't respond, so I added something jokingly to my snap story about being frustrated when "bae doesn't respond to a snap." A few minutes later, I saw I had a new snap from him and he had already viewed my story. But of course when I replied to that snap, he didn't respond!

What does all this mean? Is he just bad at this type of communication? Does he not want to talk to me (in which case I have to ask why he initiates contact)?

He might not be communicating the way you'd like him to, but he is communicating the way he wants to.

A guy can like a girl and not want to talk to her all the time. There's other things to do in the world besides talking.

Enjoy what is. If it all gets too frustrating, make it clear you'd like to be asked on a date. See what he does.
