Why does my guy friend never compliments me?

I am not talking about compliment in romantic sense, but the thing is he always give me indirect compliments, and if he sometimes compliment me directly, he adds an insult afterwards which finishes the effect of the compliment. Now, he daily talks to me , shares his feelings and problems with me, text me 24X7, and then one day, he was talking to our mutual friend for like 3rd time, and claimed her to be a 'great friend'? Lol. They both hardly make an attempt to be in contact with each other, whereas he knows I care about him and yet he has never acknowledged me for anything as such. Are we even friends?

well, i don't fuck with friends i don't know too well. if we are friends, but rarely hang out, i won't insult them. but i straight up shit on my friends all the time. as for why he insults you after complimenting you, it's because it's funny. i do that to my girl friends all the time. if we weren't friends, why would i hang out with you in the first place? sounds counterintuitive to me.

My guess: He feels something for you, his indirect compliments are to call your attention and the direct ones follwed by insults are to minimize the effect of the compliment so that you won't think he means what he means. It seems he's afraid of telling you truth about his interests.

Like I said, it's just a guess, it's the impression I had while reading your question.

I have no idea what goes on in his mind. Like, for as long as he flirts it's all fine, but as soon as I become a little playful, he becomes so defensive and then we end up insulting each other over silly things but then after a few minutes, start conversing politely and kindly again. I know we are strange.

lol, there's no reason to get defensive. That's why I think he doesn't want you to find out something and tries to give you the reverse impression.
