Why does my guy friend never compliment me?

Okay so we've been online friends for around 4 months now. And I never recall him complimenting me ever... I think the only compliment he has ever given me is that I'm really nice and not dry... (I had to reel that one out of him). Sometimes he'll show me something he's working on and even if it's not the best, I'd still compliment and encourage him to maybe do this and that. But when I show him things I work on (I study graphic design so I'll sometimes show him my designs) he'd roast the crap out of it or just say it's okay... I've shown him a pic of me one time (we were both revealing our faces) and he's just like "I guess you look okay, what do you want me to say?" and changed the subject. Like I feel a iffy about it cuz he's my only guy friend and I've only ever been friends with girls who are usually nice and give out compliments and encourage each other even tho we roast each other sometimes. I don't think I'm ugly because I've had guys compliment me as well... but yeah is being a friend with a guy this harsh, typically?
