Why would a guy stare at me with a blank expression?

I have this male acquaintance who I know for sure used to have a thing for me - he's always had a really intense way of looking at me. He will hold really long eye contact whenever he's across a room or far away, but when I'm actually talking to him or we're hanging out in a group, there'll be moments when I catch him staring before he quickly looks away (this has been known to happen several times during a conversation). He always looks at me with a blank expression as well, even when I smile at him he never smiles back - he just stares. He otherwise talks to me fairly normally. I am still kind of interested in him, but I'm unsure about him because he doesn't smile. He's always been bad at expressing himself, so I don't know if it's that or if he's just thinking really hard. Any help decoding him would be great!

Though you feel that he does not express anything, I'm sure there would have lot of non verbal expression you wouldn't have noticed, I suggest you to keep an eye on his body language when he is near you, may be then you can decode his thoughts

He's interested in you but doesn't outwardly show his emotions. Hence the blank stare.
