Why is it when I walk past a group of guys, they stay quiet and just stare?

I was with my friend and there were sooo many guys just hanging around outside the shops talking among each other. I could see some of them looking towards my direction from a far but I really wasn't sure if they were really looking at me. So I had to go into one of the shops and when I came out and I was walking with my friend, they literally went dead silent and were staring at me as I was walking past them. I tried not to make eye contact cause I would feel awkward lol. But what does that mean?
