He might just be making conversation or he might be genuinely interested in your family. Either way the fact he is putting effort into keeping the conversation going shows he has interest in you. What that interest is is the million dollar question all girls wish they could tell but really you can't tell because some guys are good fakers and know what you want to hear.
Just go with your gut instinct. If you have any doubt about the guy's true intention with you assume the worst until he proves otherwise 10 times lol.
Usually for me when I first start getting to know a girl I ask about her family to keep the conversations going and figure out what type of person she is based on her family but later on I ask because I wonder if her family will like me or not.
I think it is a great conversation to have...I think if you talk all day for the most part that there has got to be a little something there at least. But I don't know how the conversation goes, but it is totally possible because he is taking a lot f time out of his day to be talking to you and that is a good indicator :)
