Why do some guys start following and talking to a bunch of random girls on social media just after a break up?

A guy I know has just broke up from a long term relationship and he says he is not ready for another relationship yet because it is too early (3 months), however he says that ue is not the type of guy to hook up with random girls. BUT he has been following and talking to a huge amount of random girls on social media, asking them on dates and also meeting some of them.
Why is he doing all of this?
