I hold the door of others regardless of their sex. I have also had the door held for me by woman, even little kids. I smile and thank them, simply because it was polite of them to do it for me.
It is not expected that people will find the door these days. I have been surprised by some people I mistook for rude who have held the door for me. Also people you hold the door for won't always thank you or even acknowledge you when you do hold. the door for them. However I don't hold doors for admiration, I do it because it is polite and I try my best to be polite... you know... karma is a bitch...
Anyway, he likely acted surprised because heyou suorosed him. He likely thought you wouldn't hold it for him and you did.
I would highly recommend that you TELL him you think he's cute or something, unless you work in an environment that has a high probability of sexual harassment.
I will tell you how shocked I have been by forward woman now and when I was in high school.
A friends girlfriend friend said, 'hey you're cute!' To me when I was junior in high school. I literally turned at me friend next to me, looked around, realized she was only talking to me and asked, 'are you talking to me?'
She responded 'yes' and 'I said 'thanks, I'm Allen I'd like to take you out...' And we went out the next night. That was really the only time I saw her be forward like that but shoot, I liked it and her and I had a lot of fun over the next two years...
Long story short, it was hot, and I am not in the least bit shy, but it shocked me...

Young people, men and women, often misread social cues from others. Maybe he's insecure and didn't imagine you liked him at all, so when you held the door he got a different message.
