He knows it’s today and the last time we saw each other we talked about it and he said he bought me a gift (not received yet). He didn’t wish me a happy birthday though. Do you think he thinks it’s enough that he bought me a gift (that I don’t have with me) and he doesn’t need to wish me a happy birthday?

Maybe he's gonna celebrate it when the gift arrives. I'm guessing he might be just as down I'm sure the gift is something he knows you have been wanting for a long time. And wants to make the celebration occur all in one big thing and not draw it out for a week or month. Would be my guess.
