How to know if he’s actually interested in me or pretending to be?

I have interest in someone, he also seems to act a little interested since he asks a lot of questions about me and he seems supportive about things I tell him.

However; I’ve been through hurt in the past when guys would act interested in me for their own personal gain.

I choose not to contact him first often, because I don’t want him having the idea that I’ve fallen into his trap (if any).

How do I keep myself safe and see if he’s actually interested in me or not? I’m not the type to play games but at the same time I don’t want to be used again.
