Why is he staring every day if he rejected me?

So the first time I noticed him, he was sitting infront of me and staring into my face like deep stares, examining my facial features while smoking. I ignored him but felt his stares on me and looked back at him he was still staring while his guy friends where talking to each other. I thought that maybe there was something wrong with me becauise his face was veryyy serious looking lol. Since then I started noticing him and made some research on him and developed a crush on him.(Considering the fact that months ago I didn't even liked him as he was not my type I guess something changed as i felt chemistry this time I don't know) I asked one of my friends what was his name and she told me. I found him on Insta and followed him and he immediately followed me back. He posted a poll asking for chat and I pressed "yes" he texted me then and we started talking casually he asked me about myself and I about himself. He was playing PS with his friends at that time that meant that he was talking to me alongside playing with his friennds. Then for some reason he unfollowed me and I unfollowed him back lol, but he then viewed my new stories i was posting each hour. I don't know why he kept on searching my name if he wasn't interested. Then I found out he had a girlfriend I saw him kissing a girl at school and I was like "OMG no way!!!" and I gave up on him and then one month after I found out that they broke up and I thought that was my chance to start something again. I told one of my Insta friends who live in a different city to text him and ask him If he would like to get to know me etc because I didn't want to text him myself not to seem too clingy. And he said "Nooo" like unbothered. But I see him staring every day like all the time and also he was staring at me every day wayyy before I "confessed to him". Is it maybe because he thought that I was pranking him or is he not interested at all?

EDIT: I gave three months to him to get over his ex and then told my friend to text him
