He ignored my 'i like you' confession and continues to chat?

I confessed my feelings to a guy friend before leaving college to my homestate. I did it over text (lame) and said he didn't have to reply, if he didn't want, to save awkwardness. I never got a response. However, 3 months later, he reached out to me on the same website on a small chat box and we had a long conversation, a fun one, where he said I should come back to college. He never mentioned my ridiculous but heartfelt message and I texted cheerily and didn't say anything either... we started emailing, but he took 10 days to reply to my second email. He's a little bit awkward over email, but very polite and kind. He doesn't say much though.

I'm confused. Where do you think we stand? Was his reaching out to me a sign he liked me back, or could he just want to be friends? What is this with him not even mentioning the 'i like you' message or texting me at all for 3 months xD He's not a player and is conservative and introverted.

''I like you'' sounds like you like him as a friend just tell him ''lets go out on a date'' it makes things quite clear because "I like you'' means many things for example
meeting new people they can say heyy "I like you" doesn't mean he likes you and whats a relationship and many other things etc

If you are sure you should maybe ask him if he got your message 3 months ago (next time you two email or text or speak). If he doesn't know what you're talking about show him on your phone or send a screenshot.
If he is aware you will have your answer. there's many reasons maybe he didn't see any reason to pursue anything at the end of the school year?
Maybe he isn't interestes. Who knows.

He probably just doesn’t do well with expressing/processing feelings. Or there could be a fear of taking things further and it not working out. Or he’s just not interested in a romantic way.

Heheh you think? Why, because he doesn't know how to respond to my message saying everything about him was handsome, even his eyelids.
THough he never acknowledged my message, he did reach out in a different chat box on the same site during a game. This is a sign he at least wants to be in contact with me, right? I don't want him to feel trapped into responding to my emails because of politeness.
