Why would a guy act indifferent but always stare?

This guy and I get along really well. He's pretty quiet around most people. He's made it a point to get to know me and do nice things for me. He's never given a strong sign that he has a crush on me so it's hard to tell. After he talks to me a lot or does something nice for me, he will begin acting indifferent for a period of time. He won't talk to me and he will kinda act like he doesn't know me. In the past I've tried asking if I've upset him but didn't get anywhere with that conversation. So I just leave him be and I don't bother him because he acts like he doesn't want to be bothered. When we are around each other in a group setting, he will always stare at me and it's noticeable. His eye contact game is super strong too. The way he looks at me doesn't match up with the way he acts towards me, which is what makes it so confusing. I can't tell if he likes me or hates me haha.

That's how some guys act to get into a girl's head (like he is in yours). A lot of times when a guy makes his feeling obvious women loose attraction immediately so they play like they don't care. He's most likely very attracted, but he's wanting you to think more and more about him by making his intentions unclear. Is it working?
