Speaking from personal experience, I think insecurity is most it. Like we like to laugh at male insecurities but they are just as real as women's insecurities so I never really saw why they were a punchline.
But yeah I've been able to identify it and largely get past it, though it really depends on the girl. But the issue at the time was that I felt the sex game was biased WAYY against me. That she would be more than willing to leave me at any time because she has her pick of whoever she wants, while I would be stuck stranded in loneliness. So I felt like I needed to hang on as much as I could, and would get paranoid about these things. It's not a fun feeling.
But once you identify the issue as a feeling of scarcity and feeling like she views you as easily replaceable, it helps you get past it. But this can't be "told" to you, you have to discover it for yourself so that you don't become defensive and lock it in further.
But anymore, if I meet some hot guy she used to be friends with, or still is, then it's like "hey, she could have had that guy, and she chose ME." and you can kinda make it into a badge of honor.
I can't say I've perfectly resolved it. But it's enough that I like to talk about our celebrity crushes and such.
You ever see how lions interact with each other. They're one of the only animals that mate for life. If another lion however challenges the father of the pride... and wins. That younger male can now not only take over the pride but it can kill the former fathers cubs if it wants to. That's how they work. It's just nature
It gets old. I talk to a ton of females and makes with my job. My director is a male and he can call me anytime for work. My boss is female and she can do the same. Not counting my clients as well. When I am in a relationship, they never understand that and become complete jerks

Because we know that men don't ever have "friendly" conversations with women.
Being attracted to a woman is the only reason we ever talk to one.
Sure, maybe he is gay or weird, but it's much more likely that, like the average male, he is simply attracted to her.
It's so rare for a woman to actually pick a guy these days, I would be surprised if any guy isn't a little afraid that decision isn't going to change given this is the era of endless options and little commitment.

Possessiveness can stem from cruelty, insecurity or fear. It's especially common in guys that have had serious difficulties talking to women or appearing attractive.
However this isn't an excuse for guys to treat women poorly or as they're property.
I hate that too, but yet its okay for them to talk to other girls
