Guy's Behavior

Why does he compliment me so much when He does not even properly know me. he praise me saying I am humble, soft spoken, intelligent, strong woman?

This guy I know from when were students together 4 years ago. I barely even talk to him. On occasion he asked for my help with material but he was very dominating and arrogant with his approach which I did not like but I helped him. He was in my social account and We only exchanged formal greetings. This year he reached out to me for a help in the course in which we are both in. Then for some personal circumstances I asked for a favour from him saying to keep me updated for the which he gladly accepted. We casually talked over phone as friendly chat. I asked some formal questions to him as I barely remember his face or appearance but he seems to be very sweet. He praised me a lot about me as person. He also asked lot of question personal life about me. He also told me he has a serious girlfriend. He also warned me about a guy I was friends with that he told is a womanizer. He also told about his emotion regarding relationship and romance. He told me that he does not say these things to even his girlfriend. I took it all in a positive sense. However, when again contacted him for course update and as a formality I asked for his wellbeing. He said he was having problem in his personal. I politely cut him off as I wanted to keep only formal friendly relationship. I want to keep it friendly and formal.
