Does a guy checking up on you mean anything?

My coworker who lives in a different state texted me yesterday saying that he heard about the mass shooting in my state and told me to stay safe. I thought it was really sweet but I didn’t think too much of it then. However, later on that day, he texted me to see if I was up since he wanted to talk to me on the phone. I called him and once he picked up the phone, the first thing he asked was if I was ok and if the shooter was caught. Again, very sweet for him to check up on me but it was very unexpected. Does this mean anything? I normally don’t have guys check up on me like that. Not even my guy friends outside of work.
