Guys, He insulted me right after he complimented me?

Honestly, I know the answer to this one. But I just want clarification from the men on here, hence the question.

We video chatted the other day, I have spoken to him for the past two years, and from time to time we say hi.

This time it was on video. When he first see me, he giggled and told me I looked beautiful. So I felt good about myself (I have been eating healthy and noticed my skin improve) Then about two minutes after, he tells me that my face has gained weight, and it looks fat.

In the moment I always laugh, not out of insecurity but its my first reaction to everything shocking in life. We continued to talk as normal after, then we said goodbye.

Later that evening I started reflecting and could not understand why he did this after complimenting me? I was very angry (my reactions are 99% always delayed) and texted telling him he is insecure, and taking it out on me.
Guys, He insulted me right after he complimented me?
