Why would a guy keep eavesdropping into my conversations?

So nearly every conversation I have with anyone my coworker eavesdrops. He's constantly standing by me but never says anything. He's standing on his phone beside me pretending to be scrolling but I can tell he's listening. When he hears his name or something he knows in the convo, he will join in.

So he does his work with a clip board and he has to walk around count the items we have. Most of the stuff he looks for is usually where I happen to be standing lol. Well this one day he was standing by me counting something I guess and a group of new guys came and stood behind me talking. He immediately walked away but I stayed but he turns around and stands back next to me.

I think you are probably imagining most of this, but if it bothers you just walk away from him.
